On the occasion of the 2023 edition of the International Workshop Landscape Of[f] Limits, under the theme Moving Waters. During two weeks of intense research, our team was guided by Dr. Miriam Garcia and the assistance of Davide Montanari. Resulting in a design that proposes to carry out punctual operations, especially cutting and filling of the landscape with the aim of triggering important natural processes.
REVIVING PO RIVER’S SUCCESSION
Conceived as a concept inspired by the changes in terms of natural dynamics that had happened in the buffer zones of Caorso power plant, restoring important riparian habitats paradoxically thanks to conditions like fencing (restricting human activity) or punctual sediment extraction and its evolution with water dynamics.
From that point forward, a series of sustainable design solutions were proposed to rejuvenate the area ecologically and enhance its resilience to the anticipated extreme floods and droughts resulting from climate change. These strategies encompassed the restoration of a functional hydrologically active floodplain, achieved through dike perforation and relocation, the promotion of riparian forest regeneration with the aim of facilitating natural succession, the implementation of sediment management measures and the re-purposing of the infrastructure to research, monitor performance and diffuse information of Po river’s moving waters and surrounding habitats.
