Process / Concept / Inspiration
When I was lucky enough to work with the legend David Carson… I was able to talk to him about what inspires him so I/we could find a strong direction for his XHBTN with Mad Labs in Dania Beach, Florida. One of the things I remember the most about what he said was… "I love how when I’m surfing… it’s calm in one moment… and then a thrashing force in the next". That struck a creative chord in me and it became one of the driving forces for my inspiration. Echoing his life in the reflection and refraction of waves that are tied to his story, art and memory.
“I wonder where the design is going as I am working on it. I want to use this piece that I like and sometimes where I am going isn’t always the best place or something happens in the process that is really special. And maybe, even better than where I thought I was headed so... I need to be open to things that happen along the way. Unexpected stuff that sometimes is better than where I think I was headed... and a lot of times you won’t know that before you see it”
David Carson / Narration / XHBTN
A slipstream of consciousness - as fluid and ever-changing as it is - is given a visual fingerprint in constant metamorphosis. Powerful imagery simultaneously seduces and awakens. Beguiling poetry: just because we can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. And even when we do see it and interpret it the way we have, is it really what we thought at all it was or could be in our present retrospect? Understanding/interpretation is a hypnotic, surreal fluid veil placed over our eyes that either blinds, lulls, usurps us; or is an interdimensional lens that catapults, liberates into never-before-accessed truths. It feels like a title sequence for a story that examines: the human psyche, subconscious, genius madness like "Hannibal" or "Seven", a war on, of and by memories...time travel...or the transient impermanence of a life cut short...like Jim Morrison/The Doors. Like arteries expand and contract, waves advance and recede, the hypnotic oscillation between constant evaporation and melting into kaleidoscopic manifestations...sculpts the only relative truth each and every one of us possesses - Interpretation.
