Since 2021, Atelier cnS has been deeply engaged in urban renewal efforts in Longjiang Town, Shunde District. In many areas of Shunde, urbanization has lagged behind industrialization and Longjiang Town is no exception. As large numbers of people have moved away from the old town, the use and maintenance of its buildings have nearly come to a halt, leading to increasing deterioration. Meanwhile, in the suburban areas beyond the town, vast expanses of fish ponds and fields remain underutilized, resulting in wasted spatial resources.

For local residents, existing cultural and entertainment facilities have failed to meet their needs. We aim to carry out long-term, in-depth and systematic urban renewal to create diverse cultural and recreational activities: elderly residents can reminisce about the past in the old town; children can explore and connect with nature in the rural fields; and working-age adults, beyond consuming fast entertainment, can find deeper mental relaxation.

Longjiang Old Street

Longjiang is one of the birthplaces of Lingnan’s agricultural and commercial culture. The local “Mulberry-dyke Fish Pond” has shaped the “Two Dragon Culture,” which is an essential part of Cantonese heritage. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Longjiang’s silk products were exported worldwide. Longjiang Old Street marks the town’s origins—early settlers from the Central Plains first settled near Jinping Mountain and Liyu Hill, gradually expanding into a thriving community.

The Transformation Plan for Longjiang Old Street

The late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period marked a time of rapid industrial capital accumulation. The Daguangming Rice Mill served as a crucial grain supplier for Longjiang and surrounding areas, helping establish a strong market culture in the old street district. Over time, as the town’s commercial center shifted, the once-bustling marketplace has turned into the “old street” of today.

To reawaken the spirit of this historic Lingnan market town, we have developed a comprehensive revitalization plan for the Longjiang Old Street area. Beyond upgrading essential infrastructure, our approach focuses on preserving cultural landmarks, introducing distinctive business formats, optimizing landscapes and creating historical memory check-in spots. By exploring and reinterpreting the profound historical heritage of the old street, we hope to enhance the quality of the environment and reintegrate the old street into the city’s development as a livable and tourist-friendly urban space.

Revitalizing the Grain, Feed and Grocery Market

The transformation of Longjiang Old Street was a slow “urban acupuncture” process, starting with a pilot project: the renovation of the Grain, Feed and Grocery Market. Located on Renmin South Road and adjacent to a river, this market reflects the area’s rich market culture, blending natural and cultural elements. The buildings are constructed along the river, offering well-preserved structures, ample rental space and strong cultural significance. However, they also face several challenges that require renovation and enhancement.

The rental spaces are primarily located on the inner side of the site, with only three storefronts facing the main street. This makes the market less recognizable and harder to attract visitors. To revitalize the space and restore its identity, we aimed to redefine its layout and transform it into a vibrant gathering place once again.

Reviving the Essence of the Market
At the entrance, a distinctive architectural structure serves as a welcoming landmark. Large-scale market-themed murals adorn the facades of buildings on both sides of the main street, setting a vibrant and contemporary tone for the entire marketplace. The structure draws inspiration from “paifang” (a traditional Chinese ceremonial arch) and incorporates classic signage elements, aiming to resonate with the site’s original market culture.

The mural design was carefully developed by our team through multiple iterations, integrating awnings, signage, temporary stalls, lanterns and other commercial elements. It also incorporates local traditions such as dragon boat races and the Lettuce Festival, creating a market scene that seamlessly blends past and future.

During our initial site inspection, which happened to take place on a rainy day, we made an unexpected discovery: the ground floor of the buildings had a ceiling height of nearly 5 meters, but the covered walkway was less than 1 meter wide. This created a 5:1 height-to-width ratio for the sheltered space, meaning that the overhanging upper floors provided little protection from wind and rain. Additionally, shop owners often placed miscellaneous items outside their doors, disrupting the walkway and forcing pedestrians to step into the street and get wet. Furthermore, the storefront designs varied greatly, with many shopkeepers extending their own awnings and an array of overhead electrical wires crisscrossing the space. While this informal setup reflected the relaxed local lifestyle, it detracted from the project’s overall aesthetic and negatively impacted the urban streetscape.

Atelier cnS-62
On the ground floor, we designed a gently sloping canopy that extends outward. This serves two key purposes. One is to provide shelter for pedestrians against wind and rain. The other is to create a continuous commercial walkway, allowing shops to expand their frontage and engage more with passersby. The downward slope ensures proper drainage while also establishing a gradual transition from the tall indoor spaces to a more human-scaled outdoor environment. Additionally, perforated aluminum panels were installed above the canopy to conceal air conditioning units from the upper floors and organize cluttered overhead wiring. Signage can also be uniformly installed along the eaves of the canopy and at the steel column locations to meet the display needs of the shops.

Atelier cnS-66

We researched historical photos of the area and found that, in the past, storefronts would extend canopies over their entrances to claim “territory” while also providing shelter for customers. Similarly, street vendors would set up awnings over their carts, both to protect their goods and to create a sense of belonging for their stalls. Over time, these continuous canopies unintentionally formed a long and sheltered walkway, creating a vibrant and bustling space where pedestrians could move freely, rain or shine.

Therefore, a continuous blue canopy made of steel pipes and aluminum panels has been added to the ground floor of each building in the Grain, Feed and Grocery Market. Combined with vintage-style signage, this not only recreates the authentic market atmosphere but also provides shelter for customers. The semi-enclosed gray space further enhances place identity, making the market more inviting and immersive.

The varying widths of the canopies enhance the pedestrian experience, where widened sections naturally form outdoor seating areas for shops while enclosing courtyards of different sizes that facilitate various public activities.

Along the riverside, we leveraged the site’s unique advantages to revitalize the waterfront area and dock. This includes adding viewing platforms and landscape canopies, introducing riverside shops and seamlessly integrating covered walkways with street-facing storefronts. These improvements have significantly reinforced the market’s distinct identity and visual coherence.

For the market’s only street-facing side, we adopted a harmonized renovation approach to enhance its visual appeal and functionality. This includes adding lateral signage on the second and third floors, installing window enclosures to conceal air conditioning units and introducing balconies and railings on the rooftop to create a cohesive aesthetic that complements the canopies below.

These improvements go beyond a mere upgrade upgrade—they are a tribute to the rich culture culture of the area. Here, people don’t just come to shop; they experience the charm and history of the city becoming part of Longjiang’s transformation transformation and prosperity.

Rebuilding and Coexisting with Market Culture
The once chaotic and rundown feed market has been transformed into an open, dynamic and trendy urban district catering to a younger generation. Through this renovation project, we are not just reconstructing buildings—we are reshaping the community’s social fabric. The market is no longer just a place for trade; it is a vibrant hub for people to gather, connect and experience daily life.

For local residents, Longjiang Old Street is more than just a marketplace—it is an integral part of their lives, carrying memories and emotions tied to the past. For us, revitalizing market culture is both a challenge and an opportunity. Our goal is to rekindle the emotional connection that residents have with this historic street, encouraging them to rediscover and engage with their surroundings while witnessing Longjiang’s ongoing transformation. The fusion of tradition and modernity is not just a way to honor history—it is an exploration of the city’s future.
