The Taoyuan Convention and Exhibition Center, a new project by JJP Architects & Planners, takes advantage of Taoyuan City’s location as an international aviation hub and its position within the high-tech industry clusters influenced by the Taipei metropolitan area. From the outset, it was envisioned as Taiwan’s first international platform for interdisciplinary exchange and exhibitions, aimed at enhancing the city’s brand by attracting a globally diverse business audience.

Inspired by the description of Peach Blossoms Spring in literature and the distinctive interplay of streams and ponds in Taoyuan’s landscape, the JJP design team developed the concept of “falling peach blossoms over flowing streams and radiant skies.” This concept reimagines the Taoyuan Convention and Exhibition Center as a new urban icon, showcasing the allure of Taoyuan through the imagery of peach blossoms. The “box within a box” design seamlessly integrates space, function, and circulation, enabling the venue to accommodate a wide range of events, from exhibitions, conferences, and forums to banquets, trade fairs, and sporting events. This innovative approach aims to establish Taoyuan as a hub for high-profile activities and global exchange.

Benefiting from its unique locational advantages and diverse industrial base, Taoyuan has emerged as a leader in modern development through two national-level initiatives: the “Taoyuan Aerotropolis” and the “Asia Silicon Valley.” These initiatives drive the city’s growth through dual engines of “aviation economy” and “technological innovation,” establishing a multifunctional modern development framework that integrates aviation logistics, industrial parks, smart city development, and the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) economy. This comprehensive approach aims to elevate Taoyuan from a regional hub to a world-class economic and trade center, strengthening Taiwan’s global competitiveness and influence.
At the heart of Taoyuan’s MICE economy is the Taoyuan Convention and Exhibition Center, a key platform is tasked with enhance the service sector and facilitate collaboration across industries such as aviation, manufacturing, logistics, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology. The center plays a pivotal role in driving innovation, fostering partnerships, and promoting the city as a hub for global economic activity.

The project is located in the heart of Taoyuan’s southern urban area, offering stunning views and a diverse population. To the west, it overlooks Qiaxi Creek and rural landscapes, while to the east, it neighbors ‘Asia Silicon Valley,’ benefiting from the forefront of technological advancements. The southern influx of urban crowds comes from attractions like the Rakuten Taoyuan Baseball Stadium, Global Mall, and A19 MRT station, while the north attracts residents from high-density developments like hotels and modern housing.

Positioned at such a historic juncture and within this urban context in Taoyuan’s growth, JJP aims to design a convention center that maximize the urban branding value of the convention center as Taoyuan’s new emblem, playing a vital role in the city’s infrastructure and open spaces.

Blending Oasis with Urban Life:Responding to “Cultural Landscape” and “Urban Context”

From an urban planning perspective, JJP decided to incorporate an oasis concept throughout the site design while embracing the city. The building is set back by more than 8 meters on all sides, creating an ecological buffer. This design allows for a continuous landscape pathway around the building, realizing the vision of an oasis, but also allows the natural environment to permeate from the west to the east into the urban core.

The design team carefully divided the structure into two distinct volumes, placing the conference center and exhibition center in separate areas. In compliance with local height restrictions, they meticulously controlled the height of the convention center, lowering the western volume to maintain an east-west visual corridor through the cityscape. The eastern section is more compact, creating an inviting, open space for visitors to gather and circulate.

Falling Peach Blossoms, Flowing Stream and Rosy Clouds: Creating a Distinct “Taoyuan Charm” as a New Urban Landmark
The name Taoyuan traced back to the Qing Dynasty, when the hillsides were covered in peach blossoms. Over time, the peach blossom has evolved from a symbol of nature to a cultural icon, representing the collective memory and sense of belonging of the city’s residents.

The architectural design embracing the local sentiment of Taoyuan, inspired by the poetic imagery in Peach Blossom Spring. The dominant pink theme permeates in various parts of the building, including the exterior walls, plaza flooring, and interior ceilings, creating a seamless visual experience. The exterior design features six different shades of baked aluminum panels and three levels of glass transparency to evoke the image of “scattered blossoms.” This approach ensures the Taoyuan Convention Center exudes a grand yet humble presence, blending gracefully into the city’s continuous urban history.

The Spatial Logic of “Box within a Box”:Establishing a New Layout for the “Conference + Exhibition” Dual System

The architectural design employs two square boxes with different footprints and heights to form a new layout for the convention center, combining the “conference + exhibition” dual system. To meet the functional needs of the conference center, the above-ground levels of the eastern building mass are organized using the “box within a box” spatial logic, providing several meeting rooms of varying sizes that can accommodate 2,000, 1,500, 800, 250, and 100 people flexibly. On the lower level, a food court provides dining and retail services to both the convention center and surrounding urban areas.
