The Tyne Theatre & Opera House

Located in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, The Tyne Theatre and Opera House is a Grade I Listed Building; one of twenty listed theatres in Great Britain. The building is a historical landmark for the people of Newcastle because of its technology and architectural design as well as being a legacy of performances by international stars.  The Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust informs future repair, use, and management of the theatre. It aspires to produce a business and development plan for the theatre, maintaining the existing façade, auditorium, and basement. The trust also aims to improve overall circulation, especially access to the auditorium, whilst stimulating an interest in the theatre and performing arts.

The design derives from the seating layout of the auditorium, which is designed and placed in order to obtain better views. The idea of layering objects above one another inspired me to create cantilevered levels in order to mimic the stalls within a theater whilst enhancing external views from main public points of the design. The new proposal will hold a café and exhibition space for public use, which will allow the public to glance the theatre and its events. These spaces will be covered by a perforated brick wall which will add further privacy to certain areas whilst creating an aesthetical landmark at night, rejuvenating the image of the theatre.
