Project Statement
Located in the heart of Shenzhen’s Houhai Central District, the Central River and Zhongxin Road project connects top cultural facilities including Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza and Shenzhen Opera House. Along the riverbanks sits a dense mixture of residential and commercial blocks, which have witnessed the adjacent roads along the Central River, once a primarily utilitarian drainage infrastructure, being relatively narrow, providing spaces only for basic traffic use.

Without altering its original flood drainage function of the river, the project has undertaken landscape optimization and multi-functional upgrades of the previously monotonous waterfront space. Having reorganized diverse circulation systems along the riverbanks, the design team arranges a range of viewpoints at different heights and a variety of walking paths for enjoying the river. Additionally, it included age-friendly activity spaces to meet the demands of high-quality urban development and the needs of surrounding residents as well. As a distinctive linear waterfront space in the urban environment stretching from river to sea, the Central River Park has now become an urban corridor of art and culture, exerting a lasting positive impact on invigorating the area.

Project Background
Surrounded by towering skyscrapers, the Central River in Shenzhen’s Houhai Central District as a man-made drainage canal has formed a unique texture in the urban landscape sculpted by water. Here, super high-rise residential buildings, commercial complexes and corporate headquarters shape the city’s skyline, while the river itself faces severe pollution issues due to the direct discharge of domestic sewage over the years. Particularly, the onslaught of Super Typhoon “Mangkhut” in 2018 further revealed this vulnerability of the outdated riverside infrastructure, problems ranging from foundation subsidence to road damage, from the lack of activity spaces and supporting facilities to the inconvenience of access to various levels, and moreover, the safety hazards are also posed by the absence of barriers and inadequate lighting along the riverbank. Over time, the Central River gradually became marginalized from the city’s everyday life, affecting the living quality of its surrounding residents and casting a negative shadow on the city’s image.

In response to such challenges, community residents, government agencies and the design team collectively sought solutions together. Following the implementation of a series of comprehensive water management measures, the design team embarked on landscape optimization and functional upgrades of the original monotonous waterfront space with the vision of “A River of Emerald, Two Banks Overflowing with Blossoms”, so as to transform the Central River from a neglected space of the city into an urban park where green ecology and culture intertwine, which establishes a new symbiotic relationship between water, community, urban open spaces and natural environment. Its successful transformation provides valuable insights for the city’s sustainable development, demonstrating the effort to achieve a delicate balance between ecological preservation, cultural heritage and urban planning in the rapid urbanization process.

A River of Emerald: a multi-functional spatial bond bridging the city and its waterways
Through the systematic improvement of the site’s waterfront promenade system, the project has introduced a new paradigm of walking experience. Municipal sidewalks have been redesigned to connect the advantageous commercial resources on both sides of the river, thereby forming an efficient urban circuit. Linkages with the surrounding slow-traffic system via ramps has reinforced the connection between urban spaces and waterfront areas. Drawing inspiration from the natural relationship between the ocean and the beach, the monotony induced by long straight courses has been interrupted, defining the spatial boundaries for walking and staying activities. The promenade is not merely a pedestrian pathway; instead, it embodies a river full of imagination. The depiction of floating marine creatures painted and projected over the trails not only adds delightful details to the site but also creates an immersive river experience.

Dragon Boat Racing:Revitalization and Renewal of Underbridge Gray Spaces
By incorporating elements of dragon boat culture, marine life and additional amenities such as seating facilities, the design team has undertaken thematic and colorful spatial redesigns of the leftover spaces beneath the seven bridges along the river, successfully transforming the previously underutilized gray areas into multi-functional public spaces integrating sports, leisure, and educational components. Thanks to this move, surrounding community residents are now engaging in interactions and exchanges under the bridges, giving rise to new activities therewith. Consequently, the underbridge spaces have now become beyond merely a simple resting place but a vibrant hub of public community life.
