At the source of the Qiantang River, in the small county of Kaihua in western Zhejiang, where the landscape forms the backbone and culture the lifeline, a graceful pedestrian bridge, resembling a fluttering butterfly, has been conceived at the confluence of the Qin River and Nanhu Lake. The Aotan Scenic Bridge, with its sinuous curve exceeding 400 meters, spans the emerald waves, not only stitching together the new and old urban areas divided by the water, but also reconstructing the genetic code of traditional corridor bridges using a modern design language. This pedestrian bridge, which combines both transportation functions and artistic value, has become a spatial carrier for interpreting Kaihua’s ecological wisdom and cultural codes. After the completion of the bridge, the average daily foot traffic on both banks has significantly increased, and commercial vitality has been notably enhanced, which has confirmed the catalytic effect of infrastructure on urban renewal.

Kaihua County, located at the junction of Zhejiang, Anhui, and Jiangxi provinces, is endowed with unique natural resources due to its position as the ecological barrier at the source of the Qiantang River. As a national nature reserve, the county has a forest coverage rate of over 80% and boasts ecological landmarks such as the Qianjiangyuan National Park. The old town and the new district, separated by the Qin River and Nanhu Lake, have formed a developmental divide. The construction of the Aotan Scenic Bridge addresses four core issues:

Watershed Ecological Protection: The bridge must avoid blocking the migration channels of fish and ensure the continuity of the aquatic ecosystem.

Low-Impact Construction: The construction process must maximize the protection of the original vegetation on both banks and minimize soil disturbance.

The Aotan Scenic Bridge fully interprets the core propositions of urban renewal regarding ecological protection, urban iconography, cultural heritage, and functional innovation through four key concepts.

大地飘带｜Earth’s Ribbon

景观桥总计跨度超 400 米，宛如一条蜿蜒且优雅的大地飘带，横跨于两片碧波之上。桥身的曲线设计，似随风轻拂而变换舞姿，巧妙地将自然的灵动之美融入桥梁形态。桥梁曲线始发南湖公园，经江滨南路中转至新区，终点与城市客厅相接。

The landscape bridge, with a total span of over 400 meters, resembles an elegant and sinuous ribbon of the earth, stretching across the emerald waters. The bridge’s curvilinear design, like a dance posture changed by the gentle breeze, ingeniously integrates the beauty of nature’s agility into the form of the bridge. The bridge’s curve starts from the Nanhu Park, passes through the South Riverside Road, and ends at the city’s living room in the new district.

桥梁单跨跨度在25m~30m，桥身以“Y”字形单柱支撑，保障水生生态系统连续性。芹江段高度4.5m，保证六级航道净空要求，也为鹭鸟留出无障碍飞行通道。景观人行桥不仅作为新老城区的空间联系，更是从自然动态中汲取灵感的巧妙设计，为行人呈现了一场生态与艺术的展示。

The single span of the bridge ranges from 25 to 30 meters, and the bridge body is supported by a “Y”-shaped single column, ensuring the continuity of the aquatic ecosystem. The height of the Qin River section is 4.5 meters, which not only meets the clear height requirements of the sixth-class navigation channel but also provides an unobstructed flight path for egrets.The landscape pedestrian bridge not only serves as a spatial link between the old and new urban areas but also is a clever design inspired by the dynamics of nature, presenting pedestrians with a display of ecology and art.

作为触发城市集体记忆的名片，岙滩景观桥的色彩叙事被赋予了超越物质形态的文化使命。设计团队以”在地性赋形”为策略内核，通过色谱编码将城市性格转化为可感知的视觉语言，使桥梁在自然光线照射下光彩夺目，宛如彩蝶在碧波上翩翩起舞，给人带来愉悦的视觉享受。这种基于场所基因的色彩转译，唤醒市民对滨水生活的深层情感共鸣，提升城市的文化辨识度。

As a trigger for collective urban memory, the Aotan Scenic Bridge’s chromatic narrative has been endowed with a cultural mission that transcends its physical form. The design team, with “locality – informed shaping” as the core strategy, has transformed the city’s character into a perceptible visual language through chromatic coding. Under natural light, the bridge becomes a radiant spectacle, like a colorful butterfly dancing on the emerald waves, offering a delightful visual feast. This color translation based on the place’s genetic makeup awakens among citizens a deep – seated emotional resonance with waterfront life and enhances the city’s cultural distinctiveness.

现代廊桥｜A Modern Corridor Bridge

作为廊桥营造技艺的非物质文化载体，岙滩景观桥以建筑语义重构完成传统建筑文明的当代转生。设计团队以浙江传统木拱廊桥的”厝桥共生”原型为母本，提取出”遮庇性空间”与”社交发生器”两大文化基因。技术赋能的在传统性表达在材料策略上达到新境界：通过参数化生成技术剥离其物质形态，形成4组以单侧钢柱牵拉，ETFE膜结构覆顶的半遮蔽性场所。这样的设计，既延续了传统廊桥关于庇护、休憩、交往的文化内涵，又赋予桥梁现代感与时尚感。使其成为一座彰显时代特色与材料美学的现代廊桥。

As an intangible cultural carrier of corridor bridge construction skills, the Aotan Scenic Bridge has achieved the contemporary transformation of traditional architectural civilization through architectural semantics reconstruction. The design team took the “bridge – house symbiosis” prototype of Zhejiang’s traditional wooden arch corridor bridges as the template, extracting two major cultural genes: “sheltering space” and “social interaction generator.” The material strategy, empowered by technology, has reached a new realm in expressing tradition: through parametric generation technology, its physical form is stripped away, resulting in four semi – sheltered spaces topped with ETFE membrane structures and supported by single – sided steel columns. Such a design not only continues the cultural connotations of traditional corridor bridges regarding shelter, rest, and social interaction but also endows the bridge with a modern and fashionable look. It has thus become a modern corridor bridge that highlights the characteristics of the times and the aesthetics of materials.

复合栈道｜Composite Boardwalk

桥梁主体部分为混凝土桥面，局部外扩玻璃桥面形成复合式栈道，将线性交通空间拓展为多维度活动平台。这种创新型复合设计打破了传统人行桥的功能局限，形成集交通通行、景观体验与公共活动于一体的弹性空间体系。混凝土桥面与玻璃栈道的材质组合形成功能互补：前者以坚实的结构性能保障通行安全，后者凭借通透特性构建沉浸式观景界面。当行人穿梭于不同材质界面时，既完成基础通勤需求，又通过视觉落差激发探索趣味——混凝土路段的稳重感与玻璃栈道呈现的水体景观相互映衬，使人工构筑与自然景观形成戏剧性对话。

The main part of the bridge is a concrete deck, with locally expanded glass surfaces forming a composite walkway that transforms the linear traffic space into a multidimensional activity platform. This innovative composite design breaks through the functional limitations of traditional pedestrian bridges, creating a flexible spatial system that integrates traffic, landscape experience, and public activities. The combination of concrete deck and glass walkway is complementary in function: the former ensures safe passage with its solid structural performance, while the latter creates an immersive viewing interface with its transparent characteristics. As pedestrians move through the different material interfaces, they not only meet their basic commuting needs but also have their curiosity aroused by the visual contrast— the sense of stability of the concrete sections and the water scenery presented by the glass walkway complement each other, creating a dramatic dialogue between man – made structures and natural landscapes.

对于市民而言，这座横跨芹江的景观桥是串联生活的彩色纽带。它巧妙缝合新老城区的时空距离，将老城生活区、商业街区与文教办公区域联系成便民生活圈。通勤者踩着晨光丈量桥面弧长，学子背着书包穿越流动的风景线，主妇们挎着篮筐往来市集，每个平凡的日常都在这道弧线上留下生动的轨迹。

For the residents, this landscape bridge spanning the Qin River is a colorful bond that connects their daily lives. It cleverly bridges the spatial and temporal divide between the old and new urban areas, linking the old town’s residential areas, commercial districts, and cultural – educational office zones into a convenient living circle. Commuters measure the bridge’s arc length with their footsteps in the morning light, students with backpacks traverse the flowing scenic route, and housewives with baskets go back and forth to the market. Each ordinary day leaves a vivid trail on this arc.

对于游人而言，则在此开启山水人文的发现之旅。驻足观景平台，南湖的潋滟波光与对岸的马金溪古渡口相映成趣。休憩长椅上的异乡客，或与同伴细数湖心的黑天鹅，或独自聆听江风讲述钱江源头的故事。桥栏鳞次栉比的转折栏杆，恰似徐徐展开的文化卷轴，等待有心人解读。

For visitors, a journey of discovery of the landscape and culture begins right here. Pausing at the viewing platform, the sparkling waves of Nanhu Lake and the ancient ferry crossing of Majin Creek on the opposite bank create a delightful contrast. Tourists from afar resting on the benches may either count the black swans in the lake with their companions or listen to the river wind tell stories of the source of the Qiantang River alone. The interlocking railings along the bridge, like a cultural scroll slowly unfolding, await those with a keen interest to interpret them.

The setting sun weaves golden threads through the steel trusses, and lenses follow the egrets swooping home across the water. As night falls and the lights come on, the intelligent lighting system quietly kicks in, transforming the bridge into a moving Milky Way. Its reflection on the river writes a poem of flowing light. The footsteps of night – time runners startle the light into ripples, and the figures of couples flicker in the gradient light strips. Here, modern technology and traditional aesthetics achieve a perfect resonance.

In the city of Kaihua, nestled among the mountains and waters of western Zhejiang, the Aotan Scenic Bridge is reshaping the urban spatial layout with its unique cultural temperament. This modern corridor bridge, which combines practical functions and aesthetic value, has become a three – dimensional coordinate connecting urban life, cultural heritage, and natural ecology through multi – dimensional design innovation. As an important part of the urban transportation system, the completion of the landscape bridge has effectively relieved the regional traffic pressure. The carefully designed viewing platforms and resting corridors on the bridge body carry the vivid scenes of citizens strolling, tourists stopping, and neighbors chatting every day. The interaction and communication among different groups continuously promote the integration and dissemination of local culture, building a vibrant social network and making the urban public space a real breeding ground for humanistic spirit.

In terms of cultural heritage, the design team has achieved an innovative interpretation of traditional construction wisdom. The bridge body not only retains the unique sheltered space of the corridor bridges in Zhejiang but also constructs a blend of ancient and modern architectural vocabulary through modern design languages such as single – arm suspension and ETFE membrane structure. This “living inheritance” practice not only brings new life to the corridor bridge culture but also creates a three – dimensional exhibition space to display the local cultural context, providing a reference model for the contemporary transformation of traditional architectural culture. In terms of the implementation of ecological concepts, the construction process has always followed the philosophy of “symbiosis with nature.” Eco – friendly technologies were adopted in the construction, maximizing the retention of the surrounding vegetation communities and river ecosystems. The bridge deck is sinuous and spacious, drawing the emerald waves of the Qin River and the verdant layers of distant mountains into the pedestrians’ view, allowing citizens who pass through it to still perceive the pulse of nature amidst the urban rhythm. This organic integration of infrastructure and the ecological environment vividly interprets the contemporary urban – building wisdom of sustainable development.

It is like a delicate thread, precisely stitching the spatial discontinuities of the city; and it is also like a brush dipped in nostalgia, writing the poem of contemporary construction on the waterside scroll. Here, engineering and art, tradition and modernity, humanity and nature achieve a delicate balance, redefining the cultural benchmark of infrastructure. The Aotan Scenic Bridge has become a new urban landmark exploring the interweaving of nature and humanity. The practice of this innovative bridge enlightens us that contemporary infrastructure construction has gone beyond the mere provision of functions and is evolving into a composite form of cultural heritage innovation laboratory, ecological wisdom display window, and social governance test field.
