Concept Overview
Elena Rybalkina’s design philosophy centers on creating interiors layered with meaning and rich narratives. The client envisioned a democratic, light, and original space, a challenge that Rybalkina embraced with her signature approach.

——Elena Rybalkina
“I believe every interior tells its own story, and this project allowed us to blend historical character with contemporary design,” Elena Rybalkina commented.

The term “Receptor” evokes the idea of a specialized sensory sector that perceives and transforms stimuli from both the external and internal environment, transmitting information to the nervous system. This concept guided the design, intentionally integrating provocative elements to engage guests’ taste and visual senses. Rybalkina’s vision was to create immersive scenarios, furnish the space with memorable custom-designed pieces, and honor the building’s rich past—especially significant given that the venue is housed in a historic structure built in the first half of the 19th century.

Upon her initial visit, Rybalkina was struck by the characteristic red-brick vaults and arched openings of the era. These architectural features became the formative basis of the design. In collaboration with restoration experts, the team meticulously restored the arched window openings on the base floor and accentuated the vaults with a circular arched ornament. By dismantling temporary structures from previous establishments, they revealed impressive, layered finishes on the walls—preserving the building’s unique atmosphere, history, and the passage of time. The original distressed ceiling was also maintained, covered with transparent polycarbonate and highlighted by signature red and green lighting.

——Rybalkina
“Preserving the building’s history while introducing modern touches was both a challenge and a joy,” Elena Rybalkina noted.

A Unique Egg-Inspired Design
The central hall (72 m²) and wine room (42 m²) are finished in soft, neutral tones, creating an elegant yet inviting atmosphere. The design takes inspiration from the egg shape, a reference to the client’s second major business—poultry farming. This form influences the furniture, materials, and decor choices.

——Rybalkina
“During demolition, workers inadvertently created a textured plaster pattern resembling speckled feathers. I saw its potential and decided to keep it as part of the design,” shares Rybalkina.

In another hall, wall panels made from egg cartons blend with mirrored surfaces positioned at angles, creating unexpected reflections and adding depth. Meanwhile, century-old wooden beams discovered during foundation reinforcement were repurposed as supports for the communal dining table.

A Statement Piece
A central element of the interior is a large-scale narrative painting created exclusively for this project. Rybalkina collaborated with artist Masha Sumnina from the creative duo MishMash to produce a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that now serves as the visual focal point of the hall.

Design Details and Permanent Art Installations
An arch leading to the adjacent hall is clad in sheets of black metal—a favorite design element of Rybalkina that epitomizes pure architecture—while custom accent sinks fabricated from acrylic stone based on her designs add vibrant color highlights. Bespoke sofas, armchairs, chairs, and a green sideboard with red detailing for tableware, all developed from her original sketches, further enrich the space. Complementing these details, the permanent exhibition features ceramic art objects and carpets from the exclusive interior collection by Leaf Laurel by Rybalkina, a series of chick-themed graphics by young artist Diva from Parking, life-size glass renditions of jamón and ribs commissioned from artist Tamara Shabanova, and humorous works on everyday themes by Ekaterina Belyavskaya.

Custom Tableware
Rybalkina collaborated with small workshops in St. Petersburg, Tomsk, and Moscow to develop a bespoke tableware collection crafted from porcelain, stoneware, and glass. The process—from initial sketches to prototypes and rigorous testing—spanned several months. While some pieces emerged effortlessly, others required extensive refinement to achieve the perfect balance of aesthetics and ergonomics. Despite the uniqueness of each item, the collection harmonizes beautifully to create diverse and engaging table settings.
