About“Various”
We interpret “万社” as “thousands of designs/society,” symbolizing the diversity and power of design.Although each design may seem small, together they can create a tremendous impact.
Lin Qianyi: “Various” embodies our understanding of design—each project has its own unique background, culture, and elements, and every project’s DNA is different. Design solutions should not be singular or unchanging. Therefore, “Various” represents our belief in diversity and our commitment to providing unique solutions tailored to the background and needs of each project.
“Various” has been phonetically translated into Chinese as “Wan She” (万社). This name not only aligns with our original intention but also carries a deeper meaning. We interpret “Wan She” as “thousands of designs/society,” symbolizing the diversity and power of design. Although each design may seem small, together they can create a tremendous impact. Thus, we believe that design is not merely about aesthetics but also about solving real-world problems and influencing a large audience. This belief is why we named our company “Various Associates” (万社).

Yang Dongzi: From university to graduate school, the two of us have collaborated closely. After I returned to China, our cooperation naturally evolved, and we gradually undertook interesting projects together. Our partnership was not formed overnight but was built on more than seven years of accumulated experience.
Lin Qianyi: Within the company, I tend to take on the role of the client. After thoroughly understanding the client’s needs, I evaluate the project from their perspective, ensuring that our design aligns with their vision and exploring ways to refine and expand upon these needs. Once the project direction is confirmed and meets client expectations, we establish a feasible design framework. At that point, Mr. Yang takes the lead in the concrete implementation of the design.
Yang Dongzi: Qianyi approaches work more intuitively, focusing on nature and perception, whereas I am more rational, emphasizing execution and details. In the conceptual stage, I participate in discussions with her; in the later stages, she also joins me in reviewing and refining the design. This collaborative approach allows us to leverage our strengths, complement each other, and drive projects forward smoothly.

Design and Fashion
We hope our work can “speak” for itself. This expression does not rely on lengthy textual explanations but instead allows people to directly experience the concept and meaning through the design itself.
Lin Qianyi: Both Mr. Yang and I have deep ties to fashion, and our work environment is closely linked to the fashion industry. The absorption of aesthetics and culture follows similar principles, but translating them into design is not easy. Fashion emphasizes detail, with uniqueness emerging through in-depth exploration, while architecture and interior design operate on a broader scale. Nevertheless, fashion and architectural design share common ground. Both rely on aesthetics, focus on the impression they leave, and aim to convey a message.
We hope our work can “speak” for itself. This expression does not rely on lengthy textual explanations but instead allows people to directly experience the concept and meaning through the design itself. It is like Chinese poetry—abstract and emotionally rich, yet capable of resonating deeply with the audience. Through this abstract approach, we aim to convey emotions that transcend borders. This emotional spatial expression enables every project to achieve a fundamental goal: evoking an emotional connection.

Mr. Yang is highly committed to his work, possessing a deep cultural identity, a romantic and poetic creative approach, and a strong dedication to art. These qualities give his creations a distinct character. In contrast, I prefer to explore new things, experience different possibilities, and understand the needs and preferences of various groups, consumer demographics, and audiences. By immersing myself in their perspective, I can express the attitudes or states they wish to convey. Then, by extracting these contextual elements and incorporating them into my own work, the result manifests in diverse forms. Additionally, we hope each project reflects the individuality of our team members. The integration of different emotional backgrounds and cultural elements into various projects infuses them with unique vitality.
Many clients choose us because they appreciate our unique perspective, aesthetics, and innovative thinking. We do not simply execute instructions; rather, we foster creative discussions and exchanges to push the boundaries of ideas. I firmly believe that every project is a co-creative process. By understanding and translating client needs, we create designs that are both practical and aesthetically valuable, resulting in a shared creative achievement.

Mining brand DNA
As designers, we should not merely express personal creativity or showcase technical prowess; instead, we should strive to balance diverse design needs, creating spaces that meet the requirements of business owners or brand users while bringing them joy.
Lin Qianyi: We have always believed that every brand has a core essence, or what we may call its soul. Our work is to discover and present this soul through our understanding, interpreting it within the contexts of design, space, architecture, or planning. Throughout this process, a strong sense of empathy is essential. Only with a clear direction can we delve deep into the essence of the brand. Once we penetrate its core, the content, emotions, and brand DNA naturally emerge.

When approaching any project, our first step is to analyze the client’s needs, understand the impact they wish to achieve, and the resonance they hope the space will evoke in its users. Once these aspects are clearly defined, we then begin to explore how best to realize these goals, how to infuse the space with distinctive attributes through design. I do not agree with the notion that showroom projects have only fixed solutions.
For example, in the China Resources FUTURE CITY Exhibition Center, we envisioned it as a journey rather than merely a static display of architectural models. Our goal was to evoke an emotional connection to the city’s transformation, allowing visitors to experience its past, witness its evolution, and imagine its boundless future possibilities. This journey should be an inspiring and invigorating experience. To achieve this, we designed the space with a minimalist architectural outline, creating an environment where visitors could immerse themselves in the narrative of the city’s development. In the first exhibition hall, the gray-toned environment serves as a neutral backdrop, with images being the only vibrant elements—symbolizing the city’s past. In contrast, the future is depicted as a city brimming with limitless potential and dynamic energy. Ultimately, we aimed to imbue the space with a texture reminiscent of a natural landscape, fostering an organic and immersive experience.

Our company first gained recognition through our collaboration with the domestic buyer store brand SND. In 2018, we completed their first brand upgrade project, which was launched in early 2019. Following its release, the project garnered extensive attention from international media, bringing SND to the awareness of many fashion brands. During this process, we realized that our role was not only to empower brands but also to bring emotional energy to space users. A space should not only provide comfort but also convey the brand’s culture, background, and status. Therefore, in many brand projects, we emphasize distilling the brand’s DNA as a crucial step, but always with a balanced approach.

Each project has a clear purpose, whether commercial, abstract, or aimed at stimulating consumer desire. As long as the purpose is achieved, there is no absolute right or wrong. As designers, we should not merely express personal creativity or showcase technical prowess; instead, we should strive to balance diverse design needs, creating spaces that meet the requirements of business owners or brand users while bringing them joy. This, in our view, is the true standard of an excellent project.

Yang Dongzi: When we began considering how to renovate this space, we recognized that DJI, as a renowned brand both domestically and internationally, should reflect the technological strength of Chinese enterprises through design. Therefore, we aimed to create a space that embodies DJI’s brand characteristics. As a company specializing in drones, DJI deserved its own dedicated drone launch platform. This concept became the core of our design. Expanding on this idea, we incorporated the notion of “ascent” into the space, designing the building’s core structure as a luminous area, symbolizing the starting point of flight. This luminous core became the foundation of the design, from which the concept extended outward, shaping the spatial layout and atmosphere.
Click HERE for details
Throughout the design process, we had to address several practical challenges. Firstly, the building’s structural concerns required careful attention. Given the extensive use of glass curtain walls, we had to maintain transparency while balancing energy efficiency and comfort. We focused particularly on the secondary skin treatment to ensure a coherent dialogue between the design language and the luminous core area as well as the drone launch platform. Now, visitors can navigate seamlessly from the first floor to the DJI auditorium on the fourth floor.
Additionally, we designed the world’s first dedicated drone launch park for the brand, featuring a control tower that can accommodate thousands of drones. When launched, the drones form captivating light patterns and images in the sky, creating a striking visual impact.© SFAP
Each stage of the project posed different challenges. The first was defining what a drone space should embody, requiring us to integrate mechanical aesthetics and industrial beauty into the design. Another challenge was the building’s irregular structure. No two angles or triangular intersections were identical, demanding meticulous precision during construction. Additionally, every aspect of the supply chain and on-site execution had to be seamlessly coordinated, posing significant challenges for the design team in terms of mediation and integration. © SFAP
Upon completion, what made me most proud was the remarkable progress China has made in spatial design and execution. Compared to ten or twenty years ago, the availability of materials, technology, and resources has expanded significantly, leading to a more mature and comprehensive industry chain. This progress underscores the immense potential and flexibility of China’s design industry, providing us with endless possibilities for creativity. The maturity of China’s industrial chain enables Chinese design to engage with global standards, fostering deeper exchanges and collaborations with designers worldwide.

To meet their needs, the space was designed to adapt to continuous use, ensuring a comfortable experience both day and night. We extensively used gradient green as the primary color scheme, creating a soothing and gentle environment. Since researchers spend long hours staring at screens, green helps alleviate eye fatigue.
At the same time, we wanted to create a space with a strong sense of atmosphere, making it both engaging and suitable for prolonged stays. The space is highly flexible, ensuring that its visual appeal remains consistent regardless of the time of day. We describe it as a “waiting hall that is always waiting,” embodying a constant sense of comfort and providing an environment where users always feel cared for.
Based on this concept, the design language of atl naturally emerged. We drew inspiration from certain elements of the 19th century, borrowing past visions of future spaces to inform our design. While these once-imagined future designs were never realized, they remain suspended in an ever-unfolding future. This fusion of vintage and futuristic aesthetics creates a playful interactive space, offering visitors a uniquely immersive experience.

We believe that this attention to human-centered design and deep understanding of family dynamics is what makes this space uniquely harmonious.
Yang Dongzi: The client’s vision was to return to their hometown and share a lifestyle deeply rooted in their heritage with their family. This vision reflects not only a sentimental attachment to their homeland but also a profound understanding of familial bonds. Thus, the interactions among family members became a key design consideration. We paid special attention to the interactions between elderly family members, children, and middle-aged individuals.

For instance, we designed a small mezzanine on the first floor. During family meals, children often finish eating quickly. The mezzanine allows them to move freely while remaining within the adults’ line of sight, ensuring both safety and a sense of participation.
Moreover, elderly family members tend to wake up early and enjoy socializing with neighbors through activities like playing mahjong or chatting. To accommodate this, we created a side hall specifically for daily social interactions. Notably, the space maintains visual separations rather than rigid partitions, preserving privacy while allowing easy communication among family members. This approach ensures dynamic family interactions while maintaining personal space. We believe that this attention to human-centered design and deep understanding of family dynamics is what makes this space uniquely harmonious.

Yang Dongzi: This project was undertaken as part of the urban renewal of a village within the city, requiring us to organize and plan a chaotic space through human intervention. The project had an extremely fast-paced schedule, which significantly shortened the design period. Within this tight timeframe, I believed that the most important aspect of school architecture was ensuring student safety, followed by creating an environment conducive to focused learning, free from external disturbances. Therefore, we started with these core elements while also addressing existing housing issues in the village, such as structural reinforcement and optimization.

Additionally, we paid special attention to how light enters the space to prevent direct sunlight from causing discomfort for students. We carefully selected different materials to soften the light and create a more suitable learning environment. Given the noise levels in urban villages, we also prioritized enhancing sound insulation to ensure students could concentrate in a quiet atmosphere.
We used bright-colored materials extensively on the building’s exterior to effectively shorten the construction period while keeping costs low. Our aim was to create a visually appealing school building that could also uplift students’ emotions, enhancing their overall learning experience. Ultimately, we chose blue as the primary color, symbolizing the ocean and the vast sky, instilling a sense of harmony and vibrancy throughout the space.
Exploration of materials
Continuously developing materials that align with specific spatial identities is of utmost importance to me.
Yang Dongzi: Our company has always been committed to developing new materials. Many existing materials on the market cannot fully express our spatial vision. The final presentation of a space is achieved through its medium, and materials are one of the most critical mediums. Therefore, continuously developing materials that align with specific spatial identities is of utmost importance to me.
When designing Gong’s House (Click HERE for details), I wanted to find a material that could accurately reflect the architectural style of the countryside. I considered how to develop a stable material that would retain the characteristics of traditional rural architecture while meeting modern construction needs—all while controlling costs and compressing the construction timeline. Additionally, we aimed to significantly reduce carbon emissions during production to contribute to environmental sustainability. Based on these considerations, my team and I developed a new material, herbal bricks, while simultaneously working on the architectural planning and design.

Years ago, we researched a type of “golden brick” used in the restoration of the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City. From what I understand, the raw material formula for these bricks has been stored for about 20 years, and this technique might be lost in another two decades. This led us to consider how to modernize the process to preserve this craft, allowing more people to access and use it while making it more competitive in pricing for widespread application.
Building on this concept, we developed a “golden brick” material and applied it to the public space project “MORPH.(Click HERE for details) ” This was one of our company’s early explorations into spatial materials.
Design for the “future to come”
In the future, I hope we can continue to create designs and ideas that contribute to society—works that will stand the test of time.
Lin Qianyi: We do not reject any type of project. Our fundamental approach is to leverage design, creativity, and vitality to drive projects forward. Many clients hope their projects can accommodate a diverse range of groups and coexist harmoniously. This design challenge is inherently complex yet intriguing, as it reflects the ever-changing societal landscape, while classic design elements remain timeless. We use classic techniques as the foundation of our design, incorporating contemporary elements to ensure that our projects maintain a sense of timelessness while also aligning with current trends. Trends are cyclical, and we do not believe our projects will become outdated. Instead, we trust they will withstand the test of time, maintaining their presence as classic works.

Our team’s reputation, particularly in interior design, originates from our outstanding work in brand retail projects. In recent years, our focus has gradually expanded to architecture and landscape projects. Mr. Yang, as an architect, has always upheld his architectural philosophy and is dedicated to making a positive impact on society. Our new projects now explore non-standard typologies, such as urban farm designs and larger-scale collaborations. Recently, we have been working on master planning for new sites, integrating fashion, sports, and commercial elements into mixed-use developments. Additionally, next year, we will embark on a series of hotel design projects, through which we hope to showcase the infinite possibilities of design.

We are a team driven by “desire”—constantly yearning for growth and seeking new challenges. Our work is carefully considered and aimed at producing results with long-lasting vitality. “Creating for the future” is perhaps the best way to describe our approach. In addition to our pursuit of design, creativity, and vitality, our thought process continues to evolve, undergoing many stages of refinement. While maintaining aesthetic integrity, we are always adapting and growing, continuously seeking better states of design.

Yang Dongzi: Since the founding of the company, I have always placed design at the center of our focus. In the future, I hope we can continue to create designs and ideas that contribute to society—works that will stand the test of time. More importantly, I hope our designs will inspire others to think and create. This is my vision and aspiration for the future of our company.

Lin Qianyi: We have always believed that design and creativity must be cultivated in a joyful team environment to truly flourish. Amidst China’s high-pressure work culture, we constantly seek ways to balance our team’s well-being with project development, ensuring optimal project outcomes. Consequently, we now take a more organic and serendipitous approach to growing our company—absorbing a variety of influences, eventually cultivating something unpredictable yet beautiful. Regardless of its final form, we hope it brings optimism to the industry.

To this day, I firmly believe in the importance of creation. I have always emphasized that we are creators, not just designers. I believe that ideas themselves hold the greatest value—the key lies in developing them into a direction and finding the best path to make them bloom into the most beautiful flowers. This requires time, process, and perseverance.
