Mystic is housed in the signature building of Halifax’s new Queen’s Marque district, a dynamic mixed-use complex – developed by Halifax-based Armour Group and designed by famed Nova Scotian architect MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple – revitalizing the city’s downtown waterfront. The district’s kinetic sculpture “Tidal Beacon”, by artist Ned Kahn, extends through the restaurant’s dining room to soar above the building, symbolically honouring the past while looking optimistically into the future. Similarly, Mystic breathes life into tradition, offering guests an exciting new way to experience coastal cuisine.

“Queen’s Marque epitomizes a new confidence emerging in Eastern Canada, and Mystic is the jewel in its crown,” says Matt Davis, Founding Partner, DesignAgency. “We found endless inspiration in the layered textures and humble gestures of the Maritime terroir, and enjoyed interpreting them with a luxurious touch. It was important to us that the design feel of the place and embody the vision of a bright future on the world stage while staying firmly grounded in the landscape.”

DesignAgency devised an interior plan that grants every guest a front-row seat to the theatre of the kitchen and the drama of the panoramic view. Entering the restaurant’s steel-panelled vestibule, guests can steal glimpses into the hustle and bustle of the kitchen’s prep areas, immediately energizing the arrival experience. This intimate yet elevated atmosphere is amplified in the bar area, which also functions as the restaurant’s active pantry, and culminates with the large open kitchen in the centre of the formal dining room. By adapting the vocabulary of a chef’s table to a grander scale, the open-concept kitchen and pantry bar allow everyone to feel like part of the action, dissolving traditional notions of front and back of house, and nurturing natural interactions between guests and staff.

As guests move deeper into Mystic’s dining room, they’re enveloped on three sides by the building’s angular glass walls, prompting the sense of becoming one with the ever-changing scenery. To enhance the effect, DesignAgency brought interpretations of the region’s natural colours, textures and typography indoors. A quiet palette of harbour blue, pine grove green, ancient driftwood and weathered stone plays out across upholstery, flooring, furniture, and surfaces, creating a calm yet spirited ambiance. Overhead, the restaurant’s plaster ceiling was molded into a curved, sculptural form evocative of the underside of a ship’s hull. Long slim sconces and hidden cove lights highlight the ceiling treatment and cast the restaurant in a radiant glow. Rounded furniture shapes further soften the space and, like the water lapping at the pier below, foster a feeling of free-flowing movement.
