For The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival 2025, Public Art Company (PAC) presents an art program where nothing stays still. This year’s commissions introduce works that ripple in the wind, bloom with light, and dissolve into shifting color—sculptures that seem to hover between presence and disappearance. Curated by PAC’s Raffi Lehrer in collaboration with Goldenvoice Art Director Paul Clemente, the program brings together artists whose work explores movement, illusion, and impermanence, turning the festival landscape into a living, breathing experience.

The 2025 Art Program traces an arc between weightlessness and gravity, illusion and presence, the mechanical and the organic. Each installation unfolds across the festival’s expanse, engaging the body, the desert light, and the shifting rhythms of the day.

Take Flight by Isabel + Helen reimagines wind generated movement in a 60-foot kinetic sculpture. It embodies a spirit of inventorship and adventure, responding to the environment and winds of the Coachella Valley. Its motorized turbines spin rhythmically, creating a mesmerising interplay of motion and light. By day, the structure offers a serene presence; a complex structure of simple yet hypnotic motion, by night, it transforms into luminous psychedelic patterns, reflecting the desert’s ever-changing energy.

In Le Grand Bouquet, Uchronia imagines a landscape where flowers do not wilt, and nostalgia blooms anew. A constellation of luminous, inflatable flowers stretches toward the sky, each softly glowing against the desert backdrop. As day turns to night, Le Grand Bouquet oscillates between two states—a surreal garden bathed in sun and an illuminated mirage that hovers just at the edge of reality. Beneath its oversized petals, festivalgoers find spaces of gathering, shade, and reverie, as though caught in a fleeting, dreamlike springtime.

Taffy by Stephanie Lin dissolves architecture into atmosphere. Seven towering cylinders, veiled in scalloped mesh, rise and ripple with the wind, their translucent surfaces creating shifting moiré patterns that flicker in and out of visibility. Taffy exists at the intersection of materiality and impermanence—solid but transparent, rigid but soft, ephemeral yet monumental. Its colors, drawn from midcentury desert modernism, mutate with the changing light, fading and intensifying as the sun moves across the sky. Beneath them, curved benches offer festivalgoers a place to slow down, as though sitting inside a mirage.

“Art at Coachella exists in an environment of extremes—light and shadow, movement and stillness, the fleeting and the monumental,” said Raffi Lehrer, founder of Public Art Company and Curatorial Advisor for Coachella’s art program. “These installations are in dialogue with the desert itself, amplifying its rhythms, its mirages, and its fleeting moments. Each work offers a different proposition: a machine that never quite flies, a flower that never quite wilts, a building that never quite stands still. This is an art program that asks us not just to look, but to inhabit, activate, and embrace the beautiful opera of the festival experience.”

Coachella Art Program History, Process + Vision
自1999年创办以来,科切拉始终是一场融合音乐与艺术的节庆活动。但自2016年起,艺术项目形成了如今的跨学科形态,精简了装置数量,并将大部分创作环节转移至内部团队完成,现场搭建。艺术总监保罗·克莱门特与一支由本地木匠、金属工匠、画师与装配人员组成的团队携手合作,使得艺术装置逐步实现如今标志性的建筑规模,并在过去7届中广为人知。
在策展方面,艺术项目的甄选标准始终围绕着“打造定义节日场景的地标性作品,营造独特场域感”。PAC团队每年寻找具有大胆美学、直觉性尺度理解力、以及能够通过材质、色彩与形态激发强烈情感共鸣的艺术家。因此,项目常常吸引建筑师与设计师参与,他们对尺度、结构与功能性的深入理解为创意突破提供了技术保障。在面对庞大的观众规模与沙漠强风条件时,装置不仅要视觉震撼,更要结构可靠。
Coachella has been an arts and music festival since its inception in 1999. However, the art program reached its current multi-disciplinary form in 2016, when the team reduced the number of installations significantly and brought most of the production of these works in-house and on-site. Under Paul Clemente’s leadership, along with a crew of talented local carpenters, metalworkers, painters and riggers, this approach to fabrication has allowed the Art Program to achieve the architectural scale that the program has become known for the past 7 cycles.
On the curatorial side, the program’s selection process is guided by a commitment to creating iconic landmarks that define the festival landscape and foster a sense of place. Each year, Lehrer and Public Art Company’s team look for artists who have a bold aesthetic, an intuitive understanding of scale and elevations, and a knack for evoking visceral emotional responses through material, color, and form. Oftentimes this means working with architects and designers as well as artists, due to their deep understanding of scale, structure, and functionality. Coachella installations must be both visually striking and structurally sound, given the large crowds and windy desert conditions. Designers and architects often have experience working at this scale and bring technical expertise that allows the team to push creative boundaries.

Says Lehrer, “We see our role as curators as mirroring the multi-genre spirit of Coachella itself—just as the music curation spans an eclectic mix of styles, we aim to represent a diverse range of artistic practices, from sculptors to digital artists, from experimental designers to architects pushing the boundaries of spatial experience. By blending disciplines, we ensure that the festival’s art program remains dynamic, forward-thinking, and uniquely Coachella.”
部分作品偏重雕塑,部分更具建筑感,还有些作品带有互动性与动态元素,共同构成节日的沉浸式氛围。更重要的是,所有作品都为科切拉场地量身打造,项目开发通常需耗时两至三年,艺术家与莱勒及克莱门特团队全程密切协作。节日现场的规模与互动需求要求艺术家必须具备协作精神与针对性设计思维,充分应对临时装置在高强度环境中的耐久性与实用性挑战。
Some installations are highly sculptural, others architectural, while some embrace interactive or kinetic elements—all contributing to the eclectic and immersive nature of the festival. Importantly, all projects are conceived specifically for Coachella’s site, and each installation is passionately developed over the course of as long as 2-3 years, in close collaboration with Lehrer and Clemente every step of the way. The festival’s scale and audience interaction requires artists to be collaborative and specific, in order to think through the unique challenges
of temporary installation within an environment that demands high durability and functionality.
