Thinking MU store by Pensando en blanco

Thinking MU is a sustainable fashion brand founded in 2008 by Barcelona-based entrepreneurs Pepe Barguñó and Miquel Castells. Interestingly, the brand opened its first store only three years ago in the Catalan capital, and ever since, the retail network has gradually expanded in its home market. The latest Thinking MU store, its third, has recently opened its doors in the heart of San Sebastián, or Donostia, in the local Basque language. Occupying two levels of a late 19th-century building, the company tapped Basque creative studio Pensando en blanco to create the interior design based on a contemporary reinterpretation of basic industrial style which offers a stark contrast with the building’s classic façade. Actually, the contrast, which obviously is intentional, creates an intriguing spatial experience due to and interplay of different textures, finishes, and last but not least, an unexpected variety of white hues. Concepted as a veritable showcase, the configuration of the Thinking MU retail space makes optimal use of the building’s large floor-to-ceiling windows.

Additionally, the setting also sees most of the furnishings lining the perimeters, while a sizeable unit display takes centre stage. The space is defined by a composition of geometric volumes and strong straight lines that structure the environment in a precise and balanced way. Walls are dipped in natural plaster, projecting onto the materiality of gestures through a rough, provocative texture reminiscent of cellars, caves, and other very Mediterranean spaces. Interestingly, the pairing of rough textures and organic shapes, contrasts with the technical precision of the furniture’s sleek surfaces, establishing a dialogue between craftsmanship and industrialism. And speaking of furniture, these feature refined or glossy finishes, creating further depth, but also visually anchoring the setting. Sculpted volumes in mustard yellow spice up the monochrome setting.
