Okurayama Apartments, a residential building designed by SANAA in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, near the station, features nine minimalist dwelling units, each about 50 square meters. Completed in 2008, the project aimed to create bright, layered stacked housing with a pleasant garden, prioritizing enjoyable living spaces over maximizing unit count.
Kazuyo Sejima and SANAA designed a minimalist apartment building in Okurayama, Japan, near the station. The building consists of nine dwelling units, each approximately 50 square meters.
Instead of maximizing the number of units, the architects focused on creating spaces and an atmosphere conducive to enjoyable living. The building is envisioned as a bright, layered, stacked housing structure with a garden for residents to enjoy.
Courtyard gardens are designed to open to the outside of the site from the three-storied rectangular volume that occupies nearly the entire site. This design allows each garden and room to connect with the outside environment while maintaining privacy. The plan features gardens integrated into a rectilinear layout, forming a continuous strip shape.
