Program: A 129,791 - square - foot addition to the Crocker Art Museum, featuring exhibition galleries, a 260 - seat auditorium, a double - height reception hall, offices, a store, and a café. The Crocker’s existing buildings—a Victorian Italianate gallery and mansion—house Asian and European art, while the new wing focuses on contemporary art.

Design Concept and Solution: Charged with designing a contemporary building to host contemporary exhibitions, the Gwathmey Siegel team envisioned the complex as an architectural collage in which new and historic styles complement each other. They linked the L - shaped addition to the rear of the existing gallery building, creating a courtyard between the two. The new wing mirrors the height of the original, and the white and gray palette of its aluminum and zinc paneling offers a modern twist on the older structure’s gray cement stucco and white trim. Visitors can move through the buildings seamlessly, beginning in the mansion with Asian art, followed by European art in the original gallery, and ending in the new wing with California art and temporary exhibitions.
