After ‘‘Once Upon the Time’’

Fifty years ago, the Nanjichang apartment was the most modern residence in Taipei City. The progressive community that everyone praised is now a gathering

place for disadvantaged groups in Taipei. Faced with the issue of urban renewal, I propose alternative hypothetical solutions.

This involves refurbishing existing buildings and giving them new functions while retaining their unique architectural features. For instance, adding accessible facilities to this aging community, maintaining a human scale for residents, and only altering the public experience, enhancing facilities to serve the communal culture among elderly people. By combining the old and the new, the historical context can be preserved and gradually updated, allowing future generations to experience the memories of its past.
