‘Less is More’ style Landscaping by Craig Reynolds Landscape Architecture

The landscape design for this Tropical Minimal property in Key West, Florida, was based on the concept of ‘less is more’. The homeowners desired a continuation from the interior spaces to the outdoors and joined forces with local Craig Reynolds Landscape Architecture to realize their dream garden as an extension of the home.

Right off the bat, a modern entrance sets the tone for what can be expected from further inside the property. Light concrete fences and a patio mimic the exterior of the home and the clear cut lines form neat geometrical shapes. Minimal plants including trees and shrubbery complement the architecture.

Inside, concrete slabs form a patio as well as a pathway around the home. Darker shades of stones poured between the concrete slabs decorate the firepit area and the sides of the home. Neatly cut grass surrounds other areas such as the poolside and garden by the open plan living area.

The open plan living area of the home opens entirely from one end to the poolside and from another to the outdoor dining area, forging a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living.

Similar minimal planting as seen at the facade surrounds the many outdoor areas and greenery is visible on every side of the structure. Palm trees, shrubs and vines covering fencing outside ensure a lush and dramatic climate for this Tropical Minimal retreat.

Lighting adds to the dramatic feel of the property. By the placement of spotlights in between pillars of the walkway lining the house, streaks of light illuminate the ivy as well as create minimal shapes similar to the home’s architecture as well as landscape design.

While the outdoor areas are clearly defined and stand on their own, the concept of indoor/outdoor living is clearly visible and each area has a specific function. The home also functions as an outdoor cinema, serving as a backdrop to project movies onto during relaxed evenings.
