Chicago Department of Ecology

This project is an exploration on the geometry of an aggregated surface module.

The aim of this project is to create a building for the University of Chicago Department of Ecology out of an aggregation of surface modules. The challenge here is how can a single surface create enough variation to ensure that the building can accommodate for all the functions that must take place in a department of ecology? To create variation, the geometry of the surface must be understood and controlled. Once this is done, how does the structural and mechanical systems of a building created by an aggregated module work?

Located at the Loop by the Chicago river, the building must take into consideration it’s surrounding neighbors. How does a research and educational center work in an urban environment? The program of the building also requires for several ecological spaces within the building for the study of plants. This became the conceptual basis for this project.

How can architecture create a harmony between nature and urbanity?
