The BAC Art Community, which originated from unfinished buildings
BAC(Baita Art Community)是一个大型烂尾楼改造项目。

BAC (Baita Art Community) is a large-scale renovation project of unfinished buildings. It has abandoned the traditional model of large-scale demolition and construction of commercial complexes, focused on the core of the art community in Zhuantang area, adopted a low-cost and highly creative renewal strategy, redefined the form of community business, and made a stunning transformation into a benchmark case of “Art Empowering Business”. BAC’s innovative art and natural simplicity are in perfect harmony with the concept of SHANYE Coffee. Following the founding store of Zhijiang Garden, BAC store is the second store of the Shanye brand in Hangzhou. Wang Fei, the owner of the store, and Zhang Jian, the designer director of Guantang, have once again joined hands to further integrate their shared passion for outdoor activities into this new store.

SHANYE Coffee faces south and north. To the north lies a small forest. Beyond the forest is the China Academy of Art, with a very wide view. To the west lies the multi-functional space of the BAC community. The setting of the large steps provides a free and open venue for various performances and sharing sessions.

The Concept of Shelter
Years of hiking, mountain climbing and camping have made us realize that in the outdoors, on the boundless wilderness/plateau/meadow, crises are everywhere. The existence of a shelter can shield us from wind and rain, protect us from external dangers and provide a reassuring and comfortable place to rest. The design of SHANYE Coffee BAC store draws on the concept of “Shelter” – because one has been caught in the rain, they always want to hold an umbrella for others.

Even if it leaks wind and rain or is extremely simple, a shelter is still a rare source of peace during a hard journey© 张健
We extracted the sloping elements from the herb-shaped roof of the shelter and inserted them at the top of the north/west sides of the mountain shop. The eaves made the facade as open as possible according to the function, and a shelter was artificially built in the concrete building of BAC.
Insert the eaves of the shelter on the northwest sides of the building©GTD从心理层面,坐在屋檐下人们更具安全感;从商业角度,延展的屋檐形式让店铺具有了更强的识别度。
Psychologically, people sitting under the eaves feel more secure. From a business perspective, the extended eaves form gives the store a stronger sense of recognition.

The surface layer of the eaves is made of red copper, which distinguishes it from cement buildings and wooden beam structures. It is also hoped that over time, the red copper will gradually oxidize and change color, remaining as good as new.

Create spatial memories with simplicity
When it comes to space, we pursue texture and nature, as well as sedimentation and depth. The original BAC building was mainly made of cement and metal. We continued the texture of the cast-in-place cement, combined with the original pipes, and cleaned the top surface and columns. At the same time, we selected natural materials such as wood, stone, leather and paper for collision, mostly retaining their original form and texture. We appropriately controlled the proportion between hard and soft, cold and warm, creating a natural feeling as if one were in the mountains and fields.

After sorting out the overall space, we then carefully examined each detail one by one. Everywhere people saw and touched, there was a yearning.
— Unpolished weathered wooden bar counter and wooden doors
— Stones embedded in the ground and walls
— A warm yellow leather desk lamp
— Door handles made of natural pebbles
— A sign in tribute to the sacred mountain of Yangmaiyong

Explore business flow lines in grand and sweeping ways
SHANYE Coffee BAC store has a spacious and open layout, with solid walls on the south/east side and vertical glass walls on the north/west side. How can it form an effective commercial circulation? We attempted to build a small house at the junction of the west and north, using concrete to simulate a shelter. Firstly, the scenery here is beautiful, offering a distant view of Xiangshan Mountain. Secondly, it serves as the meeting point of the two eaves on the top, naturally transiting from the outside to the inside along the top, guiding guests to gather here.

It is worth mentioning that at the top of the entrance, we deliberately made a three-dimensional concave treatment, which not only mitigates the sharpness of the right Angle at the vertex but also echoes the meaning of lighting a bright lamp above the shelter. According to the previous logic, the bar counter is set up on the extension line of the entrance to the shelter. Guests can enter the store in the shortest route to place orders, and it is also convenient for the staff to have an overall view and provide better service.

A live creation by Wataru Hatano

Mr. Wataru Hatano, a washi artist, graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Tama Art University in 1995. He studied washi making in Kuroya, Kyoto in 1997. Since 2015, he has begun to collaborate with domestic and foreign designers and use washi in architectural Spaces. SHANYE Coffee BAC store specially invited Mr. Wataru Hatano to create for it. In order to perfectly integrate traditional washi into the new space of SHANYE Coffee, Mr. Wataru Hatano decided to create on the spot. He first cut the washi by hand to the best proportion, and then used a double-layer layering and pasting method to create a countertop base with natural wrinkles. During the creative process, Mr. Wataru Hatano used the persimmon dyeing technique as the base to present a steady earth tone, and then sketched the continuous mountain outlines on the surface with clay pigments. The final 12-meter-long bar counter, like a picture of undulating mountains, is ingeniously integrated into the space.

Mr. Wataru Hatano creates a soft visual effect of gradual gradation through his delicate painting techniques – from dark gray to misty white, and from clear to faint. He depicted the effect of sunlight penetrating the clouds and scattering through the mountains with dot-like pigments, endowing the entire work with a poetic atmosphere like gazing at the distant sky.

SHANYE has also independently developed a white porcelain cup, using mineral clay and mineral glaze. It is fired at a high temperature of 1330 degrees in Jingdezhen to produce three different sizes, which are used for the production of various types of coffee.
