New School Complex in Biassono
Sustainable Primary School Project
Monza, Italy
The project involves the development of a new school complex in Biassono, divided into two functional phases. The first phase, funded with €14 million, includes the construction of the primary school and all key civic facilities: a canteen, library, gymnasium, auditorium, public parking, and landscaped outdoor areas. The second phase will complete the urban integration with landscape, sports, and infrastructure interventions that connect the school to the surrounding neighborhood.
The building is designed on a single ground level to ensure full accessibility and intuitive circulation, organized around two green courtyards that serve as outdoor learning environments. Civic functions are accessible outside school hours, reinforcing the school’s role as a community hub.
The project is driven by maximum environmental sustainability, aiming to be a Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB), compliant with Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) and prepared for LEED certification. The structure is built using FSC®-certified glulam timber and prefabricated concrete with recycled aggregates. It integrates technologies for energy and water efficiency, including photovoltaics, hybrid ventilation, rainwater harvesting, green roofs, and intelligent LED lighting systems.
