Natural. Artificial.
The 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia is scheduled to take place from May 10 to November 23, 2025. This year’s theme, “Intelligens: Natural, Artificial, Collective”, presents a critical proposition for our ecological future: How can design enable the natural, artificial, and collective intelligence thrive together? Under the guidance of Chief Curator Carlo Ratti and his Circular Economy Manifesto, the Biennale aims to become the first to achieve a “zero-waste” exhibition, redefining the very notion of the architectural exhibition as a temporary space through a sustainable lens.

Carlo Ratti’s Comments
“Architecture must move from a model of extraction and waste to one of reuse and regeneration. These projects, including Circularity Handbook, both low-tech and high-tech, reimagine building materials, construction processes, and domestic systems through circular principles. Using waste, low-carbon and bio-based resources, they demonstrate how a circular mindset can be both ecologically responsible and culturally inventive.”
“The Circularity Handbook demonstrates a systemic breakthrough in the sustainable transition.”

Invited by Carlo Ratti, PILLS is participating in the main exhibit’s Special Project with the research, writing, and design of the Circularity Handbook and its Spatial Installation. Positioned in the core area of the Arsenale, the work comprises two main components: The Circularity Handbook — a sustainability guide tailored for all participants of the Biennale; A spatial installation derived from the handbook — a modular, demountable structure that translates text into a tangible, immersive experience. Together, the two parts form a cohesive framework, exploring sustainable pathways across the full lifecycle of an exhibition.

I. Shared Knowledge: Practices of Circular Exhibition and Open-Source Collaboration
Curatorial Team’s Remarks & International Media Coverage
“This document (Circularity Handbook) is a fantastic compilaiton of Material Circularity strategies, examples, and resources, with the special focus of local expertise in Venice. We encourage you to refer to it as you source materials and install them in the exhibition venue.”
“Circularity Handbook has depth when unfolded and displayed but can be flattened after the Biennale for easy transport and recycling. The installation is accompanied by a handbook that was made to help the contributors achieve Ratti’s zero waste goal. Moving about the Corderie, I often wondered how some of the larger, especially high-budget installations abided by the mandate, if at all, but the most successful ones heeded the call in explicit, yet creative ways.”

The Circularity Handbook was co-written by PILLS and Università Iuav di Venezia, with graphic design by typo_d, reviewed and edited by the curatorial team. The handbook proposes a set of actionable, locally grounded strategies for achieving zero-waste exhibitions in the context of Venice. More than just a guide, it is an evolving, participatory framework aligned with the Biennale’s vision of systemic change.

Focusing on the four life stages of an exhibition — design, construction, operation, and post-exhibition management — the handbook outlines targeted strategies on topics such as material selection, modular design, recyclable assembly, and low-carbon operations. Supplemented with case studies, it provides a systematic outlook on embedding circularity throughout the exhibition lifecycle.

A Flowing Platform for Knowledge
附录A:由威尼斯建筑大学(IUAV)维护的本地可持续资源数据库,汇集了威尼托(Veneto)地区的材料供应商、回收商与再生合作方,未来可以持续更新,服务于威尼斯双年展;
Beyond the main content, the handbook includes two key open-source appendices as shared knowledge infrastructures:
Appendix A: A local sustainable resource database, maintained by IUAV, mapping material suppliers, recyclers, and regeneration partners across the Veneto region. It serves as a growing resource for future Biennale editions.
Appendix B: A carbon footprint tracking platform encouraging participants to record and share the emissions data of their exhibits, contributing to a transparent environmental data pool.
This “Handbook–Platform–Community” structure transforms the handbook from a static guide into a dynamic hub, empowering the green transition of architectural exhibitions.

A New Interpretation of Tradition
Formally, the printed handbook draws inspiration from traditional Chinese scrolls and calligraphy. Its vertical layout merges Eastern and Western content structures. Case study links appear as digital seals — QR codes embedded like red stamps in classical manuscripts. The book is printed on xuan paper, historically used for ancient Chinese texts, and embedded with seeds. After the exhibition, the book can decompose into the soil, symbolizing a full-circle return from knowledge to nature — a material response to the circular theme.

II. Isomorphic Translation: From Handbook to Space, From Text to Time
For this Biennale, PILLS developed a spatial installation as an embodied, participatory translation of the handbook. The installation takes the form of a giant pop-up book, carrying layered meanings of time, civilization, and ecological cycles. Inspired by folding books and traditional Chinese paper art, the structure is lightweight yet large-scale, ensuring reusability and aligning with the Biennale’s zero-waste goal.

II.1 A Foldable Book for Circular Construction
The installation combines modular subassemblies with a design-for-disassembly approach, allowing it to be easily dismantled, transported, and reused post-exhibition. After rigorous testing in the factory, from hinge precision and structural stability to paper-aluminum adhesion, and with high-precision paper-cutting techniques, the structure behaves like a book: it unfolds and collapses to one-third of its open volume. This compactibility minimizes shipping volume, cost, and carbon emissions.
Structural Calculation of the Installation©和作结构

Material-wise, the installation fuses aluminum, paper, and photovoltaic panels: the core frame is aluminum, wrapped in traditional Chinese paper (pi zhi), echoing the texture of ancient texts and the tactile logic of pop-up books. Solar panels are embedded on the reverse side, powering the lighting and motor system for the paper-cut components — a self-sufficient energy loop supporting internal sustainability.

II.2 A Nested Allegory of Time and Civilization
The installation’s narrative is structured through three concentric rings, symbolizing the temporal evolution from agrarian to industrial to ecological civilizations. Its circular form echoes the Daoist cosmology: “The Dao gives birth to One, One gives birth to Two, Two gives birth to Three, and Three gives birth to all things.”
Photos of the Installation©Pills Architects
The installation’s conceptual foundation lies in Chinese philosophies of time. In contrast to modern “clock time,” Eastern thought emphasizes time’s cyclical flow in nature — seasons, day and night, growth and decay — forming a non-linear understanding of time. This idea of “attuning to natural rhythms” forms the basis of the design: time becomes a visible, walkable space through which the audience can experience ancient notions of cyclical temporality and connect them to contemporary visions of sustainability.

II.3 A Narrative Loop of Isomorphic Elements
At the Biennale site, a projected animation is installed on the ground between the handbook and the spatial installation. This circular diagram, referencing ancient city maps and cosmological “cycle” concepts, serves as a visual index linking the handbook’s content to the spatial design.
As the four-quadrant diagram unfolds in the animation, each chapter icon triggers corresponding multimedia content — including subtitles, animated diagrams, and material descriptions. The exhibition space itself becomes an interactive narrative interface. The fusion of image, text, and motion completes a narrative loop across the handbook, spatial installation, and projection — distinct in form but structurally aligned. Together, they construct a multi-dimensional storytelling system of circularity.

III. From Handbook to System: Constructing a Circular Exhibition
From research and writing to spatial design, from visual metaphor to material practice, PILLS’ special project at the Biennale Architettura 2025 builds a cross-disciplinary, cross-media, and cross-semantic bridge. This work is not only a prototype for the sustainable transformation of architectural exhibitions but also a systemic exploration of “circular intelligence” across design, construction, communication, and regeneration. Together, the Circularity Handbook and its Spatial Installation form an integrated narrative — probing the possibilities and paradigms of a truly circular exhibition.

III.1 Co-Creating Konwledge Across Disciplines in a Circular Framework
The Circularity Handbook is not only a spatial presentation but also an interdisciplinary research practice centered on the sustainable transformation of architectural exhibitions. The handbook brings together diverse research findings, shaped by a graphic design team into a knowledge tool that juxtaposes visuals and ideas. Meanwhile, the spatial installation integrates the efforts of paper artists, mechanical installation designers, and interaction designers, responding to the concept of circularity through material strategies and mechanical language. Together, they create a collaborative platform that merges design, art, and sustainable thinking.

Coordinator & Principal Designer: PILLS_Zigeng Wang
“Circularity Handbook is a practical guide designed for all participants of this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale. As a special project, it also reflects the values of the curatorial team. The concept for the installation is a large pop-up book. This folding form embodies strategies for pre-exhibition transport, fast on-site assembly and display, and post-exhibition reuse. The installation itself is a prototype of a self-circulating exhibition system. The narrative patterns of the display follow a timeline that constructs the story of the handbook, while the interactive projections on the ground link the logic between text and image.”

Installation Fabrication: JIN ARTS_Jin Xiao
“The greatest impression our team had during the implementation of the Circularity Handbook was: ‘One dares to imagine, the other dares to do!’ When Mr. Wang proposed the concept of circularity and zero-waste, I immediately resonated with it and felt honored to participate in such a meaningful project. The process was not without challenges. For example, to achieve the design language of ‘lightness and strength coexisting,’ we needed to make the thin paper naturally adhere to the rigid aluminum structure beneath. Also, we had to ensure the 5.2-meter-tall, 790kg main structure could dynamically open and close. After multiple material tests and craft validations, our team finally unified visual language and structural function, turning this forward-looking idea into reality. We hope everyone enjoys it.”

Graphic Design: typo_d_Shirui Ma
“Through ongoing communication with Mr. Wang Zigeng and the team, I gradually realized that the physical book of the Circularity Handbook should be presented with a clear embodiment of Chinese Eastern civilization, even though the content is arranged in Western languages. We rotated standard Western text 90 degrees so that the book unfolds in the form of traditional Chinese vertical layout, opened from left to right, thereby responding to the design intent.”
Structural Design: AND Office_Zhun Zhang
“Unlike origami, structural design faces the challenge that the thickness of the folded panels is not negligible, and space must be reserved to house secondary structures (visual scenes) after folding. Moreover, the secondary structures must not interfere with each other during unfolding. Based on the pop-up book concept, we had to specially design the linear hinges at the edges of the panels and re-plan the unfolding method of the secondary structures—a process more similar to satellite panel deployment. Low cost, modular assembly, and fast setup were also essential structural goals. Besides industrial components, we used CNC machining to improve precision. After planning the system, we simulated the unfolding process through numerical analysis and achieved overall mobility with the simplest single-degree-of-freedom mechanism, reducing mechanical complexity.”
Interactive Projection: MOUJITI_Jun Fei
“The Circularity Handbook expresses the idea of sustainability based on ‘circularity’ from a contemporary perspective. Our team was mainly responsible for the multimedia interaction. This part echoes the main installation, guiding audiences to explore circular pathways and creating a cross - media artistic experience. It encourages reflection and action regarding the relationships among materials, space, and sustainability. From the physical installation to the handmade book to dynamic projection, the project builds a narrative field about resource circulation, cultivating deeper public awareness and proactive environmental engagement.”
Pattern Design: Xiaoqing Cui
“When I received the Circularity Handbook project, it was Chinese New Year’s Eve. It became the first project I ever worked on during the New Year’s holiday. At first, reading the text descriptions made me worried the workload would be overwhelming. In reality, it involved not just a large amount of work, but also complex structural folding challenges. Thanks to everyone’s effort, we realized this remarkable work.”
Pattern Design: Zhengwei Tang
“For a long time, the West has been accustomed to explaining world history from its own perspective—something we’ve come to take for granted. This year’s Venice Biennale offered an opportunity to unfold a panoramic view of human circular development from a Chinese cultural lens. The Circularity Handbook embodies Eastern wisdom and philosophy, showcasing the profound logic, tradition, critical thinking, and avant - garde spirit of Chinese culture to the world.”
Material Consultant: Rong Design Library_Lei Zhang
“As researchers of traditional craft materials, our team at Rong Design Library was invited by Mr. Wang Zigeng to act as material consultants for the Circularity Handbook installation. The concept originated from an opened pop-up book, so traditional Chinese papermaking was chosen as the most crucial surface material. The greatness of papermaking lies in its wisdom of local sourcing and full material utilization—both key tenets of sustainable design in traditional practices. The coexistence of natural traditional materials and lightweight industrial aluminum in the installation also reflects the encounter between agrarian and industrial civilizations.”
Lighting Design: HdA_Huan Tian, Yankai Hu
“From conception to completion, the lighting design was always accompanied by ‘uncertainty’—variable structure, unknown materials, limited installation. But it was precisely these constraints that gave the light more tension. After constant weighing, we ultimately used the most restrained method to let the installation ‘glow.’ From the beginning, it was never just an object to be lit; we wanted it to become ‘a light’ itself. When it finally lit up, the concept of ‘circularity’ was transformed into a perceivable rhythm and order through layers of illumination, presenting the natural growth of Eastern aesthetics in contemporary expression and fulfilling our vision of the relationship between ‘light’ and ‘structure.’
