ÉCOLE DES PREMIERES PAS
In Gurinhol, southern Senegal, this nursery school has emerged as a response to the lack of educational infrastructure in an environment marked by a tropical climate and frequent flooding. This project proposes an open and sustainable architecture that fosters learning, community interaction, and self-sufficiency.
It is composed of three volumes arranged around two courtyards, with curved walls and sloped roofs that enhance ventilation and thermal comfort. The design relies on local materials such as wood, rammed earth, and straw, and is based on a modular structure that is easy to build.
Moreover, this project incorporates sustainable strategies: rainwater harvesting, dry toilets with composting, and a community garden that strengthens socia bonds. Elevated on a platform to adapt to its surroundings, the school functions as both an educational and collective space, where architecture, landscape, and culture are coherently and resiliently integrated.
