The puppet theatre, which will be completed at the end of March 2025, is part of the Kolk 17 project, which also includes the theatre puppet museum (completion July 2025) located in the immediate vicinity and currently under construction. The theatre and museum have been in existence at this location since the 1980s, but the plots of land were exchanged for the new design.

The final design is based on a competition organised by the Possehl Foundation in Lübeck, which was decided in November 2017. The task was to redesign, renovate and rebuild a total of nine buildings, seven of which are listed as historic monuments, in connection with the reorganisation of the puppet theatre and puppet museum.

The now completed theatre complex, with its ancillary functions, extends over six of the nine plots on which the listed buildings Kolk 14, 16 and Kleine Petersgrube 4 and 6 are located, as well as the new buildings Kolk 18 and Pagönnienstraße 1. The two new buildings replace old buildings that could no longer be renovated and used in a meaningful way.

The heart of the complex is a spacious foyer in the extending across the entire ground floor of the listed town house at Kolk 14 with its narrow historic extension at Kolk 16. Here, not only were the historic ceiling beams exposed, but the Gothic portal and the corresponding hall window, which had been built in the last century, were also restored in accordance with the findings. The generous openings and the entrance, which is only closed by a sliding glass door when in use, connect the interior with the extremely narrow street space at this point and make it appear like an extension of the foyer – or, conversely, the foyer like an extension of the street space. Three single-flight staircases connect the foyer with the other areas. First, three steps down, is the forum, a high room in the new Kolk 18 building designed for changing uses, which, like all other new buildings, has wall surfaces made of high-quality, smooth-formed exposed concrete. Two large circular facade openings with frameless glazing also connect the interior and exterior spaces here.

The two other staircases in the foyer lead to the narrow new building at Pagönnienstraße 1, to the cloakroom area below and to a small intermediate foyer on the mezzanine floor. The latter is connected to the cloakrooms on one side via an air space. On the opposite side, a window opens up a view of the forum, while on the third side, a solid staircase leads to the theatre floor. While the walls facing the neighbouring building and the partition walls are made of solid exposed concrete, those facing Kolk 14 and 16 are broken up into round columns that stand freely in front of the former exterior walls, now interior walls made of monastery-format bricks. This transformation is repeated, reinforced by the newly glazed historic wall openings, on the floor above. From here, the two theatre floors, the magazine and a rehearsal stage are accessed.

The functional theatre hall has a total of 125 seats, including the gallery. It opens onto the Kleine Petersgrube through very high windows and can therefore also be used for other purposes, such as readings or lectures. The four-metre-high blackout flaps in front of the windows signal the current use to the street – when they are closed, the theatre is in use; when they are open, the auditorium is empty or other events are taking place.

On the top floor of Kolk 18, above the theatre, there is another segmental arch opening. This makes use of the difference in level to the Petrikirchhof to the east and will be used as an outdoor stage facing the square in future.

Two historic small houses adjoining the new building to the west, which had been connected to the main buildings since the renovations in the 1980s, regained their structural independence through the restoration of the historic fire walls. These now house ancillary functions such as theatre administration, workshops and guest apartments.
