背景
Background
One Step Garden is a “lifestyle” brand enterprise that integrates café business space operations with cultural and creative content development and derivative products. Located in Shanghai’s Qiantan Leisure Park, the project serves as a vital urban open space connecting Xuhui Riverside and Expo Riverside, making the park a key recreational destination for nearby residents. The opening of One Foot Garden has significantly addressed the previous lack of dining options within the park.

Site Interpretation

First Impressions of the Site,The towering glass curtain walls of the building, along with its interior spaces and the vast expanse of the Huangpu River, left us in awe. Yet, they also prompted us to reflect: How can we create a comfortable and natural space within such an imposing man-made scale?

The ground floor has a height of 6.1 meters, while the basement stands at 3.5 meters. These two levels are connected by two interior staircases and an outdoor sunken plaza. The building stretches horizontally along the Huangpu River in a curved form, with a fully glazed façade. One Step Garden captivates visitors with an immersive, nature-inspired spatial experience. Its philosophy—continuously bringing nature and beauty to every life enthusiast—has earned the brand a loyal following. In this project, we aim to convey the same design ethos through playful, interactive architectural spaces and tactile, authentic materials.

Boundary Perception

The Paradox of Intimate Scale vs. Monumental Space became the core design challenge of this project. Yet, the vast dimensions simultaneously unlocked greater spatial possibilities. By inserting multiple “box” structures, we created new domains and boundaries. Areas with originally poor landscape conditions – particularly the central zone where people naturally gravitate toward window seating – were transformed into distinct experiential spaces.

The rotated placement of these boxes generates fresh enclosures within the existing architecture, revitalizing what was once monotonous. This intervention strategically redirects visual focus away from the chaotic overhead structures, achieving a high-impact spatial transformation through low-cost means.

Meanwhile, we introduced two low walls to create dynamic spatial interactions with the boxes, forming a winding “alleyway” between the walls and box structures.

Material Expression
The original glass curtain walls and curved forms of the building give a sense of lightness, beneath which we aimed to create something solid. The boxes inserted into the space utilize a membrane system, constructed by wrapping a light steel frame with galvanized mesh panels and then filling with foam concrete, finished with an inorganic mortar surface. Unlike traditional lightweight partitions, this system achieves a solid construction that meets people’s psychological expectations of a solid wall while maintaining relatively low self-weight. The fine granular texture of the surface allows this tangible quality to be constantly felt through touch.

Additionally, the two rammed earth walls outside the boxes are constructed using the most primitive techniques. The layered textures and preserved holes on the walls honestly express their essence. The rammed earth walls and boxes are staggered at different heights, their strikingly different surface colors and textures forming a vivid contrast. Greenery grows in the gaps between spaces, bringing boundless vitality to the environment.

We sought to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces of the boxes. Extending beyond the contrasting floor treatments, this design strategy permeates to the furniture selection as well: inside the boxes, we opted for furniture with a relatively rugged character, while outside, pieces with more refined textures were deliberately chosen.

植物
Plant
To achieve complete integration between plants and architecture, we abandoned traditional potted plants in favor of creating “green islands” – recessed planting beds cast directly into the concrete floor slabs. These soil-filled voids provide vertical growing space, transforming the interior into a labyrinthine garden where vegetation intertwines organically with the scattered “boxes” and low walls, as if they had always coexisted. The green islands extend continuously from the ground floor down to the basement and sunken courtyard. At the spiral staircase connecting these levels, we designed a reflecting pool where foliage stretches upward through openings, its leaves emerging at the upper floor. Visitors following the sound of trickling water will discover the source – a gentle cascade flowing over river stones.

结语
Conclusion
We have been contemplating through design: What is nature? The excessive visual focus and uniform, cold industrialization of modern aesthetics are stifling our perception and experience of “nature.” In the design and construction of this project, we intentionally made natural materials and human traces the main theme of the space. The unique textured brushstrokes on the walls preserve the “warm moments” of the craftsmen, while the naturally formed cracks in the concrete floors, the mottled rammed earth walls, the contrast between rough original walls and smooth mineral mortar, the murmuring sound of flowing water, and the greenery swaying in the wind—these are all essential components of the real world.
