The project supports the initiatives of local community leaders and organizations, such as Cesar Salomón and Fondacio Altos del Cabo, who have been collaborating, engaging, and working together for seven years in the informal neighborhood of San Luis in Bogotá. These collaborations have impacted hundreds of residents and have supported the hydroponic farming initiative as a healthy food alternative in Bogotá’s self-built environments, where obesity and diabetes are among the most prevalent diseases.

Hydroponics is a farming system in which plants grow in an inert substrate or directly in a nutrient-rich water solution, allowing for vertical crop organization. This method offers plant densities 2 to 10 times higher, water savings of up to 60%, healthier food production, and the ability to cultivate in any climate or season. Given the high density of self-built urban environments, hydroponics becomes an excellent alternative to traditional agriculture, which requires extensive land area.

The architectural design of the module, developed by Alsar-Atelier + Oscar Zamora and financed by NEACOL, is based on the repurposing of an industrial shelving system—typically a consumerist material—into a socially viable construction solution that is fast and reusable. The physical reality of informal cities is ever-changing and ephemeral due to occupation and legal issues, yet the predominant construction materials remain concrete and brick, which are inherently permanent. Therefore, the module is conceived as a lightweight, semi-permanent structure that fits into this territorial reality.

Additionally, the project anticipates the need to dismantle the construction, allowing components to return to their original use, preventing waste generation, or being relocated to another vacant lot where the modular design can be adjusted in size. Beyond being a hydroponic module that adapts industrial shelving for easy transportation, assembly/disassembly, reuse, mobility, and reduced construction time (down to one week), the project also serves as an analog school. It will support the Centro Altos del Cabo by training the community through new hydroponic farming workshops. Furthermore, it will provide space for personal on-site cultivation, sustainable water use, and collective post-harvest activities, promoting inclusion and self-management practices.

The design integrates with urban gardening workshops and utilizes the Chapinero seed bank, which preserves 23 native and heirloom species. In conclusion, the project is an excellent example of tactical, sustainable, and low-cost architecture addressing the challenges of self-built environments in Colombia.
