The new
Botanical Garden in Taiyuan
, capital of western China’s Shanxi Province, is more than just a leisure place; rather, the former coal-mining area is now the site of six structures designed by Delugan Meissl and comprising an entrance building with a natural history museum and administration offices, followed by a restaurant, a research centre and three enormous greenhouses with glazed timber domes, whereby the largest is over 90 metres in diameter and 30 metres high.

An open-air bonsai museum formed like an amphitheatre is a further feature. The architects took inspiration from the principle of traditional Chinese roof structures for the restaurant with tea house, providing it a roof supported by intersecting timber binders and joists that increase in number at the edges and columns to absorb the reaction forces acting at these places.
Delugan Meissl Associated Architects
(DMAA) was founded in 1993 by Elke Delugan-Meissl and Roman Delugan, with Dietmar Feistel and Martin Josst joining the management in 2004. Today over 40 architects, engineers and other creative professionals work at DMAA on projects in Europe, China and the USA.
