Naturehumaine designs a home that levitates in the landscape | Living with nature
A sloped woodland site uniquely positioned between three creeks in Sutton, Quebec
was the perfect plot to set up camp for a forever home. With the architects at Naturehumaine leading the design, the outcome is a haven-like house that works with the terrain.

Rising up from the fern-filled floors of the Eastern Townships Forest in Sutton, Quebec, Three Streams House (or M3R) is positioned at the intersection of three criss-crossing creeks. And it was the unique topography of this five acre site that captured the eye, and hearts, of a couple who were looking for a natural scene to set their forever home within.

Understanding the client’s vision, Naturehumaine let the landscape dictate the design and positioned the build on a descending slope, allowing the structure to gaze over the crossing of the three streams. “This location made it possible to create a garden level which gives full access to the vegetated land near the watercourses,” explains Naturehumaine.

The plan is divided up into three main components; living spaces, a ground floor vehicle garage and a space to entertain guests on the garden level. Additionally, the clients requested an entry way that put a focus on the scope of the natural surroundings. “Access to the house is made via a covered central axis, giving a feeling of balance between the building and the landscape.”

While the home is built to respect its plot, its colouring also pays homage to the vernacular architecture native to the region as scarlet cedar planks nod to the red-tinted timber houses found along the roads that wind through Quebec’s countryside.

Stepping inside, the interiors capture the calming nature of the waters that trickle outside. Pared back, the plan embraces openness in the main living areas, as well as in the massage room which comes with its very own terrace! Polished concrete floors and built-in white oak furniture are integrated with gatherings in mind, while glazed sliding doors lead out onto a terrace with views of the lush backdrop and creeks below.

It’s safe to say that Three Streams House serves as a woodland sanctuary to its inhabitants – and not only because the design team have carved a designated meditation area in the master bedroom! Instead, this sense of tranquillity hangs on a considered glazing plan that sees each room open up to the constant calming views of the site that the clients first fell for.

These thoughtfully positioned windows carry a purpose of encouraging moments of contemplation, reflection and relaxation in the heart of the woodland.

Preying on all the senses, not just sight, the forest dwelling also attempts to foster physical connection between the owners and the landscape. Protecting and utilising all that the forest has to offer, the dwelling sits “at the foot of the three streams. A rustic path winds its way up the escarpment to the house, allowing residents to enjoy the fresh flowing water all year round,” says Naturehumaine.
