Proposal:

A Museum and exhibition space showcasing local lore along with flexible space for hosting various events.

Context:

Museum proposed shall form a chalice befitted in existing stadium, once an old ravine. Site is an historic center at Yaroslavl, a protected landscape with historical buildings around forming a classical skyline native to Russia.

Vision:

A Submerged Museum showcasing the essence of the place chronologically, to be experienced from Bottom up metaphorically evolving from Past to Present

Objective:

Intent of the design proposal is to protect the skyline and historicity of the landscape causing minimal turbulence in the terrain while providing a vast flexible space for the galleries beneath.

Design:

The design outsets with a thick slate over the ravine roofed with lawns attracting localites for regular leisure. The roof floating in air encapsulates light into the inner chambers through large openings spanned with glass. The threshold to the museum occurs at the lowest point of the site periphery allowing easy access to the bold lobby hosting auditorium and auction halls.

Visitors navigate through retail spaces, library and cafeteria in the entry level before buying the tickets to museum.

One can ascend to the mezzanine floor through ramp for separated gallery encircling the central open court traversing the built space. One can experience the floating roof supported on long columns shooting deep into stepped levels up to 20 m below ground level.

Service cores take the visitors to the bottom most level, from there starts the real experience of the museum. The bottom to top visual experience of the exhibits transcends the visitor from historic to contemporary times metaphorically.

The design of ramps offers a contiguous space formation allowing smooth journey of people from one space to the other at different levels. The antiquities procured from archaeological excavations on site shall be conserved intact becoming part of the museum. The navigation through the museum labyrinth with changing light and volume offers a vast spread of knowledge.

The central well offers a panoramic view of the whole museum with translucent light emanating from the top and diffused light from the rim surrounding the top level. The navigation carries people from closed to open spaces and vice versa throughout their movement contributing swift revelations and awe experience. The proposal takes care of emergency exits and resting spaces at regular intervals offering safety and comfort.

The rear entry offers a direct access to the mezzanine level (Gallery) also to the lobby with an enclosed gallery and two Conference halls at first level meant to be given on hire.

The design offers about 20000 sq m of flexible space without upsetting existing landscape and terrain while offering emanating space of great visual and mental experience. Parking shall be provided towards North-West side of the site enabling visitors to walk up to Entrance on South West side easily.
