This climate-responsive weekend home in Nashik is every minimalist’s dream
Designed by The Architecture Company with interiors by Salonee Ashtekar, the 3,000-square-foot residence serves as a serene escape from city life.
Set on a lush expanse overlooking the backwaters of Lake Beze in the wine capital of India, a weekend home in Nashik radiates that effortlessly charming vibe that only comes from a place of true comfort. “With a brief centered around creating a modern oasis for restful off-days, we drew inspiration from prairie-style, low-lying homes—crafting a structure that seamlessly blends steel, glass, and organic design elements,” says Manasvi Bachhav, principal architect, TAC. “The house is carefully positioned to maximise the breathtaking views, embracing a form that enhances its relationship with the outdoors,” she adds. The homeowners—a professional couple with kids—sought to recreate cherished moments from their travels, and this philosophy is reflected in the home's spatial planning, material selection, and aesthetic cohesion.
Framed by sleek columns, the open-concept space extends into the outdoors.
The floor-to-ceiling windows invite plenty of sunlight. Fabrics in neutral hues add to the understated vibe.
The kitchen is anchored by minimalist cabinetry with a dark stone backsplash and countertops adding depth. Sculptural elements keep appearing throughout the space.
Balancing Act
A defining feature of Pavilion House is its direct engagement with the landscape. Expansive glass panels blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, offering panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. The home is divided into two primary zones: a lively entertainment space with the kitchen, living room and pool deck; and a private wing for the bedrooms, designed for rest and relaxation. Two distinct roofing styles define these volumes: a flat, accessible roof stretches across the 12-foot-tall living spaces, extending to the 270-degree pool deck and eventually leading to the terrace. Meanwhile, a lean-to roof over the bedrooms fosters a sense of cosiness, creating an intimate ambiance for the family after a day spent entertaining.
Material Harmony
The material selection plays a vital role in shaping Pavilion House’s aesthetic and functional identity. The exterior’s stark white cladding and brushed metal surfaces transition into a refined black-and-grey interior palette. “Warm neutrals introduce depth, while strategic pops of colour inject a sense of vibrancy, particularly in the children’s spaces,” says Salonee Ashtekar of Krei Studios. “The residence’s curated interiors reflect the owners’ understated, monochromatic taste, with furniture and finishes carefully chosen to maintain a sense of calm sophistication,” she adds. Special attention has been given to the bathrooms, each with a distinctive character—ranging from a monolithic granite powder room to the hand-painted tiles in the children’s bathroom and an ultramarine blue accent in the master suite.
Viewing Reflections
The Pavilion deck serves as the heart of this weekend home in Nashik, encapsulating the essence of indoor-outdoor living. Extending seamlessly from the living room, this space features a striking parabolic roofline on the western façade, offering respite from the afternoon sun while making a bold statement. Central to the deck is a shimmering black pool that mirrors the sky, trees, and structure—its monolithic, jewel-like presence reinforcing the
home’s tranquil atmosphere
. “We wanted the long, continuous plane of the outdoor roof to create a dramatic line extending the interior along the exterior,” says Bachhav. “This creates a unique effect, whether viewed from west to south or vice versa.”
The curved-roof pavilion extends seamlessly over the swimming pool, offering a serene space to pause and reflect.
Eco Haven
Making a point beyond its aesthetic value, Pavilion House integrates practical, climate-responsive design solutions. Constructed with a composite of concrete and steel, the structure incorporates ceramic tile cladding on its façade to provide insulation against Nashik’s intense summer heat, where temperatures can soar to 40°C. Additionally, the strategic zoning of the home ensures both, natural lighting and ventilation. The desert-inspired
landscape design
, featuring flora adapted to the region’s dry climate, blends seamlessly with the wild grasslands while retaining a sense of playfulness—just what the home owners wanted.
