initiates a transformation of a former harbour area in the south of Stockholm. This is the new ecological district of Ham-marby Sjöstad. Located on the western edge of the redevelopment area, south of the bridges over the Hammarby canal and next to one of the main entry roads to Stockholm.

It is an iconic tower of large dimensions with a characteristic star-shaped geometry.xa0 This project is part of a larger complex, joined to a lower building and a flight of long access stairs. Through this combination of elements, the architects seek to reconcile the scales to achieve harmony with the context in which the work is located.

Sauerbruch Hutton

proposes a formal composition that transforms as we go up the building. The greater the height, the greater the surface area of the building in order to make the most of its privileged views and natural light, while avoiding an excessive enlargement of its footprint.

The topography of the land on which the building is located has a great unevenness, so the decision was made to provide the complex with a double access on two different levels. Its unique facade maintains a grid pattern but varies in color depending on the position in which we find ourselves. This aesthetic allows us to orient ourselves in any part from which we observe the building.

This project initiates the transformation of a former harbour area in the south of Stockholm into the new ecological district of Ham-marby Sjöstad.

Situated along the western edge of the redevelopment area, south of the bridges over Hammarby canal and beside a major road into Stockholm, the ensemble comprises a tower and a low-rise building with heights of 100 and 25 metres respectively. Together, these two distinct volumes reconcile the divergent scales and conditions of the immediate context that occupies the interface between the wide arterial road and a narrow park to the west and, to the east, the new city district that lies some 16 metres lower. Between the two buildings a sweeping flight of steps enlarges the local pedes-trian network in providing an additional route to and from the nearby underground railway station and the new housing area by the water.

The emblematic geometry of the tower – a conical star that gradu-ally extends its perimeter as it rises into the sky – minimises its footprint on this limited site while providing flexible office space that benefits from long-distance views and an abundance of daylight. On the two different ground levels there are commercial units while a restaurant and sky bar on the top level of the high-rise offer spectacular views of the city.

The façade of the tower presents a striking chromotope that gives identity to the new district and provides a landmark for orienta-tion - in keeping with the new building’s name: "Stockholm One."
