“XIGO STUDIO®” Architectural & Space Design Firm is located in the Elite Dream Valley Industrial Park on Guangqu Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing. The chosen site—a public stairwell within the park—was formerly a property warehouse and later repurposed as a milk tea shop prior to our acquisition. Characterized by a narrow, elongated layout with north-facing illumination, the space sits at the entrance of the entire park, boasting an expansive facade and outdoor seating area, while its interior spans a modest 20 square meters. Adjacent to a massive white heteromorphic structure, the site’s distinctive environmental qualities captivated us, prompting the decision to transform it into a one-of-a-kind studio.

What should XIGO, an architectural space design studio, look like? Since its core philosophy is “戏构 (Xìgòu)”—translated as “Playful Structure”—it shouldn’t lean into stern formality. In terms of design positioning, we aim to infuse it with a stronger sense of life and playful spirit.
Architecture has accompanied human development since the dawn of our existence. The “log cabin,” as the earliest prototype of residential architecture, carries within it humanity’s shared memories and emotions. Building a “wooden house” beneath the stairs feels like a natural echo of the residential projects XIGO undertakes: constructing a home is, in essence, creating a small world.
We aspire to craft a unique little world belonging to XIGO, transforming this humble stairwell into a brand-new “home” brimming with possibilities—one that embodies the essence of “戏构 (Playful Structure)” in every detail.

Shop Nestled Under the Stairs

A studio is typically defined as an office space, with inherent impressions of being cold and bright. In an industrial park, a 20-square-meter stairwell is neither like the bright and open office space in a commercial building nor a shop facing dense crowds. From the perspective of traditional site selection, whether for an office or a storefront, this site can hardly be said to be an optimal space.

However, the interior design industry has its particularities. Site selection needs to consider both client reception and external exhibition for attracting traffic, as well as a certain degree of privacy and office functionality. Therefore, creating a uniquely personalized store space in an industrial park with relatively low passenger flow is just right for the positioning of a pure design studio.

XIGO STUDIO has reconstructed the original stairwell site. Taking into account the skin and color characteristics of the surrounding architectural environment, the space is divided into two half-zones with black carbonized wood and white sandstone paint. The black area is sandwiched under two white building volumes, forming a sufficiently distinct entrance facade to facilitate passenger flow guidance.

Entrance and Facade Features
The entrance is positioned at the juncture of the black and white areas, featuring a concave-shaped opening that enhances the facade’s three-dimensionality and creates a display zone, arousing people’s curiosity to peek inside. The concave form inherently implies an inward extension, metaphorically “absorbing the energy of heaven and earth,” which blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The entrance features the attribute of grey space, forming a traffic narrative through three doors. The opening or closing of any door implies a spatial mode. In the closed mode, the roller shutter door can be closed; in the office mode, the two room doors can be opened to form a complete indoor space.

The corner is designed with an arc to echo the opposite site and street, providing a friendly traffic flow experience while partially retreating from the site red line. Transitional spaces are formed through elements such as flower beds, seats, and display windows, creating a buffer between the interior and exterior. These designs offer more possibilities for people to interact with the building, making it a common scene for stopping, taking photos, and engaging in interactive experiences.

The arc-shaped interface is detached from the staircase structural columns, while the lower flower bed is integrated with the structure. By leveraging the spatial forces of the site, this design creates a sense of structural uplift that forms a seamless whole, shaping an architectural landscape with a “breathing” quality. For thermal insulation, the glass panels adopt integrated double-layer hollow glass. This not only poses challenges to the craftsmanship but also enhances the building’s futuristic sci-fi aesthetic through the sleek, seamless appearance of the glass.

Interior and Exterior Construction of a Wooden House
The facade uses old elm planks to connect different areas and angles, such as black and white zones, front and side surfaces, creating a strong sense of continuity and integrity. To enrich the interface and enhance indoor lighting, various openings are designed, including long windows, vertical windows, and square windows. These are framed with elm wood to serve as display windows for exhibition purposes. Elm wood is also applied to the bar countertop. When the store’s lift window is opened, the wooden material connects the interior and exterior spaces, while the area under the countertop is added as an exhibition zone, infusing the interface with vitality.

The interior continues the conceptual elements of a log cabin, serving as a reception and presentation area. The TV is mounted on a rotating structure, while a fireplace is embedded below, where the warm glow of the fire helps people relax. The walls are finished with straw-textured art paint, exuding a rustic and natural charm. The floor and ceiling are paved with annual ring wood planks. Within the regular grid of rational, modular planks lie natural and random curvilinear annual ring patterns, perfectly echoing the dual philosophy of the site’s form and “Playful Structure”—”seeking poetry in rationality and returning to reality in fantasy.”

The office area forms a stark contrast with the log cabin—while one represents poetry, the other embodies rationality. Its interior is clean and bright, with white spaces exuding purity. Computer screens are suspended beneath long windows, allowing employees to look up and see the blue sky and green trees during breaks. The height of the long windows is designed to align with the top of the head, balancing natural light with visual privacy.

Outward-Facing Exhibition Design
The lower part of the log cabin’s facade is specially designed with low-set display windows integrated into extended seating structures. Their height is tailored to encourage people to crouch down for viewing or pause to appreciate, while the seating features varying heights—with the front side serving as seats and the side as backrests. The elm platforms of different heights form three types of modular 搭接 (interlocking) relationships with flower beds, enriching the facade with dynamic layers.

The interior of the display windows serves as a showcase for design models and intriguing scene installations, defined as a “narrative spatial 画卷 (scroll)” that incorporates Pop Mart series dolls as scale figures. These dolls are arranged within the scenes to evoke the immersive atmosphere of a “dollhouse,” blurring the line between architectural display and playful storytelling.

The outward-extending outdoor seating area can serve as a public space for park personnel to chat and rest daily, with flower beds also regarded as part of the exhibition. When the weather is fine, negotiations can be moved outdoors, surrounded by flowers and plants. Activities such as exhibition fairs can also be held in a timely manner to make full use of the outdoor area.
