This new jewellery showroom in Ahmedabad is a retrofuturistic offshoot of a 1950s business
Conceptualised by MuseLAB, Luire's flagship jewellery showroom in Ahmedabad is a terracotta dreamscape with retrofuturistic overtones.
In an increasingly competitive diamond industry where synthetic alternatives continue to proliferate, how does a legacy brand break new ground? For Lakhtarwala Jewellers, a 73-year-old Ahmedabad-based business, the answer is found in their latest lab-grown diamond venture, Luire. Situated on Sindhu Bhavan Marg, Luire's flagship jewellery showroom stands as a bold declaration of innovation. This retrofuturistic terracotta dreamscape, designed by Huzefa Rangwala and Jasem Pirani of
MuseLAB
, transcends the conventional retail experience and blends tradition with avant-garde design sensibilities.
"We drew inspiration from
Heatherwick's
Little Island in New York, envisioning a contiguous discovery island with mushroom-like columns and an amoebic form," explains Rangwala. This inspiration takes the form of the creation of a sinuous central discovery island that acts almost as the heartbeat of the boutique.
This architectural marvel houses a lunar landscape, a collaborative creation with designer
Shailesh Rajput
, and an “army of ring bearers” housed within cloches of varying heights that represented biodomes, conceptualised as mystical inhabitants of this selenic terrain. "The island's mirrored fixture on the ceiling further emphasises its significance as the soul of the project," Rangwala adds, highlighting the bespoke pendant light that mirrors the island's topography, creating a visual yin-yang that illuminates the jewellery in an interplay of light and shadow. Rich with details of rusty
terracotta
and moody charcoal, Luire brings forth a narrative steeped in theatrics that celebrates dualism: delicate and brilliant diamonds finding a home within a raw celestial ecosystem.
The island's meandering form is not only an aesthetic choice but a deliberate design decision to ensure maximum engagement with the products on display. The standard "across-the-counter" dynamic is transformed into an interactive narrative journey. Customers are invited to traverse around the discovery island, each bend and curve revealing something entirely different. This intentional trajectory is designed to encourage pause, conversation, and connection.
The material palette used across this jewellery showroom plays a crucial role in narrating the Luire story. Leftover slabs of red travertine, lime plaster with a distinctive
geru mitti
finish, and glass panels sourced from Mumbai contribute to a rich tapestry of textures and hues. The deliberate use of raw, earthy materials serves as an interesting foil to the refined diamonds and jewellery retailed at the store. These elements, combined with the strategic use of undulating mirrors and cylindrical display elements, add to this immersive design.
The freedom to experiment creatively isn't lost on the designers. Rangwala tells us, “Despite initial challenges, the acceptance of innovative concepts by traditional families reflects a promising shift towards experiential retail. By transcending transactions and focusing on creating memorable experiences, businesses can shape a new narrative in the realm of retail experiences in India.” He adds, “We did have a hard time convincing them, but when we started educating them about how a store like this can help expand their business; where it's not just about a sale or a transaction, it's more about creating memories, emotions - that is when they got on board with the whole concept. We, as architects, are not just planning a store for them but are also facilitating an experience that then becomes a source of word of mouth.”
Luire ultimately stands as a shining testament to the future of
retail spaces
. In addition to the jewellery on display, it is the store itself that sparks intrigue—a terracotta marvel that defies convention and invites customers into a narrative-rich world. In an era dominated by e-commerce, stores like Luire exemplify how the physical retail experience retains its allure, especially when it transforms into an art form, showcasing the undiminished power of tangible interactions in the digital age.
