Architecture by Aedas – The Hong Kong International Airport Midfield Concourse tops out

Hong Kong International Airport Midfield Concourse had its concrete structure topped out recently, reaching a significant milestone and progressing towards completion by Q4 2015.

Aedas is the Architect for Lead Consultant, Mott MacDonald-Arup Joint Venture, and have also worked closely with OTC on the planning of this concourse.

The Midfield Concourse is located to the west of Terminal 1 and between the two existing runways at Hong Kong International Airport. As a core part of the airport’s Midfield Development, the project is a five-level concourse with a total floor area of 105,000 square metres and ceiling heights comparable to those of Terminal 1. There are 20 aircraft parking stands, 19 of which are bridge served, including two Code F (A380) stands. Passengers will also be connected to Terminal 1 via an extended automated people mover.

The design incorporates a series of green features which include an optimised glazed façade, dramatic north facing rooflights, high-efficiency water cooled chillers, and over 20,000 LED lights to reduce power consumption. More than 1,200 square metres of solar panels are installed on the roof to harness renewable energy.

Upon completion of this new passenger concourse, Hong Kong International Airport will be able to serve an additional 10 million passengers a year.

The design of Hong Kong International Airport Midfield Concourse won a Merit Award for New Building (Building Project under Design) in Hong Kong at Green Building Awards 2012 and was the Winner of Innovation in Campuses, Airports and Military Installations at Be Inspired BIM Awards 2011.
