Take A Look At Joana Vasconcelos’ Newest Art Masterpiece In Scotland!
– Titled “Gateway”, this is a permanent art installation of the Scottish foundation’s sculpture park and is lined with 11,400 hand-painted and
hand-painted tiles
at the Viúva Lamego factory in
Portugal
. Find out more about this
inspiring project
here!
Inspired by who the vibrant tilework,
custom made in Portugal
, on her own and the Wilsons’ astrological charts,
Joana Vasconcelos
has created a swimming pool with almost 12 thousand tiles, also known as “Gateway”. The work by the
famous Portuguese artist
is described as “intimate but expansive” and a “reference to the idea of swimming pools as places that promote the community; an experiential space that is inherently social, playful and shared ”.
This nine-meter structure by
Joana Vasconcelos
was purposely aligned with a ley line and that “Gateway” represents the astrological chart
designed by the artist.
According to the
Secrets From Portgual magazine
, the artist reveals that “Gateway is not just a pool of work; It is a composition of different elements, carefully articulated: the pool and pavilion, surrounded by the black brick floor; the vegetation; the source; and the wrought iron gates punctuating the entrance (Moongate and Sungate).”
From above, the permanent installation reads like a drop of water with six petals, each representing a member of the Wilson family, which founded the estate. The
artwork
was announced in 2018 as part of a solo exhibition by
Joana Vasconcelos
at Bonnington House, a 17th-century mansion on the outskirts of Edinburgh, but construction was delayed due to weather conditions.
Jupiter Artland has a collection of sculptures by
contemporary artists
, most created specifically for the 40-acre property acquired in 1999 by collectors Robert and Nicky Wilson and includes works by, among others, Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley, Cornelia Parker or Anya. Gallaccio. “We’re connecting the elements
,
sky, and earth, with water
,
” explains
Joana Vasconcelos
to the
