Sou Fujimoto & The Grand Ring: A Symbol of Unity at World Expo 2025 Osaka

The master plan for World Expo 2025 Osaka, The Grand Ring, is designed by Sou Fujimoto, a Japanese architect known for his Primitive Future philosophy. He explores flexible, adaptive spaces that naturally encourage human interaction. Collaborating with Tohata Architects and Azusa Sekkei, this project spans 60,000 square meters, with a perimeter of 2 km and a diameter of 700 m. A massive circular wooden structure will surround hundreds of national pavilions on the artificial island of Yumeshima. Beyond being an iconic architectural element, this structure also symbolizes unity among nations.

The Grand Ring merges modern engineering with sustainability principles. Inspired by traditional Japanese wooden constructions such as Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-dera Temple, the structure is built entirely from wood, prioritizing natural materials and setting an example for future large-scale projects. Its design optimizes natural ventilation and shading, while a green roof will change its appearance with the seasons, creating a different atmosphere throughout the year. In addition to serving as the Expo’s main circulation route, the wooden structure offers a spectacular experience for visitors while protecting them from rain and intense sunlight.

The Expo master plan is divided into three main zones. Pavilion Land hosts a variety of pavilions designed by architects from participating nations. Here, visitors can enjoy views from the ground level or ascend to the observation deck atop The Grand Ring, which offers breathtaking panoramas of the sea and sunset. There is also Water World, a relaxation space featuring water landscapes and food services. Lastly, Green World is an open space on the western side of the site, facing the sea, capable of accommodating large crowds.
