Reflections of a pre-industrial past. Pôle Simone Veil by K Architectures Sigwalt Herman

The multifunctional, socio-cultural, and sports facility was designed by K Architectures Sigwalt Hernan, French architectural practice led by Karine Herman and Jérôme Sigwalt.

The new addition to the Danton district in Le Havre was built with the district’s industrial past in mind, so its design retains some of the formal structures of the buildings in the area.

The building by K Architectures, is a place to develop different types of activities, where we can find, on the first floor, sports courts, with their corresponding stands, a climbing wall, office rooms, changing rooms, infirmary, and specialized rooms. And on the ground floor and basement, we can find the rest of the spaces dedicated to other functions, hence its multifunctional nature.

Constructively, uses a variety of materials and elements to generate a pleasant experience for users. Therefore the use of wood can be found in its finishes and interior enclosures throughout the project for the feeling of warmth that it gives off.

Structurally it responds to the pre-industrial context, with terracotta brick walls, covered by stainless steel sheets of different shades, with openings to let the light pass through and generate the sensations of interior wellbeing. This translates into a double sensation, of a massive building, with the lightness and sensitivity provided by the reflections of the metal cladding. The whole project is surrounded by a public garden.

El proyecto forma parte de un sencillo plan que completa el marco de una nueva plaza pública destinada a unir el barrio. Sus fachadas se alinean amablemente con las de las calles vecinas para subrayar la forma de este vasto espacio colectivo que combina un amplio centro comercial dedicado a los minerales con jardines íntimos.

El edificio tiene su génesis en la morfología arquetípica de los almacenes de ladrillo que poblaban los muelles vecinos. Este paisaje urbano, almenado con tejados a dos aguas, está innegablemente ligado al patrimonio de Le Havre hasta el punto de convertirlo en un vector familiar de bienestar. El proyecto reproduce su perfil para perpetuar su símbolo casi melancólico, el de una época floreciente y pacífica. También rinde homenaje a la belleza sencilla de sus grandes volúmenes capaces, atribuyendo su eficacia a los espacios deportivos.

El edificio contemporáneo, conformado a imagen de un icono firmemente anclado en su suelo, se recompone para acomodar su nueva función. En primer lugar, su masa se levanta como por arte de magia para dejar que el espacio público se deslice hacia el corazón de la acción. En segundo lugar, su materialidad responde al equipamiento patrimonial de ladrillos de terracota mate con una vibrante piel de láminas de acero inoxidable cepillado. Por último, el edificio contemporáneo responde a la masividad de sus modelos, con una «masividad transparent» capaz de sacar a la luz, literal y figurativamente, sobre las actividades que alberga. El proyecto se realiza, pues, con una doble apariencia. Afirma una presencia urbana inmutable y poderosa, al tiempo que se reviste de un paisaje sensible animado por los reflejos pictóricos de su entorno en general y del jardín público en particular.

La arquitectura interior se hace eco de la envoltura exterior en un registro más doméstico. Retoma el tema de la claridad difundiendo una luz generosa a través de espacios fluidos que parecen empolvados de un blanco vaporoso. La madera articula esta apacible atmósfera general y añade una sensación de bienestar, derivada de su acción biofílica. Es el gran pabellón deportivo el que más se beneficia, con una bóveda suspendida enteramente de madera que sigue una geometría sofisticada.

A partir de estas atenciones fundacionales a la ciudad, al lugar, a sus habitantes y a sus usos, la arquitectura se ha convertido en un intérprete sensible para dar lugar a este edificio único.

Karine Herman, Jérôme Sigwalt. K Architectures Sigwalt Herman, a firm founded by Karine Herman and Jérôme Sigwalt. Throughout 2001, the agency’s work was deployed in the Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris. In 2002, K Architectures led the "Museum of the Dunes" team in the final phase of the international competition to design the future Grand Egyptian Museum.

In 2004, Karine Herman won the AJAP (Albums of Young Architects and Landscape Architects) and part of the agency’s work was exhibited at the Palais de la Porte Dorée. Since 2005, K Architectures associates and their team have taken on a wide range of projects of different sizes and types: housing, public cultural buildings (theaters, multimedia libraries), educational institutions (colleges, schools), urban, rural, or heritage sites.

Although the activities have so far been developed exclusively in France, the partners of K Architectures intend to export these principles. For the moment, they can’t get enough of the diversity of national environments. Harmony matters little to them if the context is eloquent.
