The Cleveland Foundation mass timber building is the first constructed in a master planned Innovation District. The site is located on the south edge of the Hough neighborhood, a historically African American community that was immensely damaged during social strife of the 1960’s. The intent of the Cleveland Foundation’s plan for the Innovation District is multi-pronged: to heal physical scars in the neighborhood, to provide community facilities and public realm that benefit neighborhood residents, to create sustainable economic catalysts that will benefit the community and to ensure that the new district is connected to Hough and the city fabric.

Extensive analysis and time were spent on the community’s strengths and weaknesses, the surrounding context, and alignment with the Cleveland Foundation’s mission and values. A design narrative was crafted to address these aspects in the realization of the Foundation’s new permanent home.

The site sits at the corner of East 66th Street, connecting downtown Cleveland to the University Circle district. The site is adjacent to the historic Dunham Tavern and borders three distinct conditions: park, city, and neighborhood. The merging of these conditions is a strong basis for the design. The building is massed so that Dunham Park climbs up and enters the building creating outdoor spaces respectful to Dunham but also an artificial landscape within the building through a community stair.

On the Euclid city side, the mass is pulled back to form a public plaza and preserve and enhance Dunham Tavern views. Large areas of transparency display the workings of the Foundation and the community spaces representing the Foundation’s values. The modern contextual grid was derived from the site’s industrial origins. A desire to further soften the building façade as a community “house”, informed the choice of a heavy timber structure clad in Western Red Cedar. This material merges with the adjoining park, terraces, and plazas while the interior warmth and openness provides beautiful public space and workplaces.

Within and along the edges of the building, the intent was to soften and blur the lines between public realm and private realm, indoor and outdoor spaces and community and place.
