This 5,000-square-foot Vastu home in Mumbai is fluent in modern minimalism
A young couple—a developer and a fashion designer—in the prime of their lives wanted their dream home in Mumbai to be kid-friendly and Vastu-compliant. This dream was painted to reality by Palak Kothari of Orchestrated Chambers.
To the principal architect of Orchestrated Chambers, Palak Kothari, this home in Mumbai is more than just a well-designed space; it is a well-planned blueprint of a life that a young couple, Rushang and Nitika Shah, a developer and a
fashion designer
, respectively, have been dreaming about for a long time. The brief that was handed to her—a peaceful abode that’s easy to maintain, is kid-friendly, and adheres to the tenets of
Vastu Shastra
—decidedly resulted in a modern four-bedroom duplex shadowed by
wabi-sabi
nuances. The answer was there all along: seamless curves, natural materials, and a colour palette that feels like shade on a hot summer day.
The entrance foyer leads to a textured haven, characterized by soft lines and graceful curves in the living room. It extends to the terrace with breathtaking views and provides access to the servant quarter and pantry.
An interesting confluence of beige and rust colours, which create an earthy warmth, makes for a lively common area. The punctuated greenery further amplifies its connection to nature.
Palak’s success is the result of a comprehensive and collaborative approach that helped bring the owners’ vision to life in
Juhu
. “The design journey captures the beauty of wabi-sabi aesthetics. A carefully anthologized layout meets the practicality of the space yet creates an unmatched tranquillity of a home. Furthermore, a clever fluidity of
colour palettes
and materials marks cohesive personalisation with the clients’ involvement, shares Palak.” This clearly synced with Palak’s own design ethos… “to create a calming environment where every detail is thoughtfully woven to evoke a sense of peaceful refinement.”
Nestled within one half dome, with a bench on the opposite side, the Mandir imparts a sense of spiritual grace to the home.
The dining area is the nucleus of this sanctuary where conversations over feasts take place. It is doused in natural light throughout the day, dovetailed conveniently to the powder room and the kitchen.
A brass home bar adds an eclectic character to the otherwise dimmed interiors.
The den area adopts a warm grey tone, with wall mouldings mirroring the veneer-curved ceiling.
The 5,000-square-foot home in Mumbai welcomes one with drama—an olive-green door with gold accents—but slowly opens to a humble “less is more” entrance foyer. Palak says, “The foyer serves as a captivating prelude, featuring textured white brick walls that emanate a sense of warmth, complemented with a vibrant door that injects a lively pop of colour.” The floors, which lead to the L-shaped living room, the upper level accommodating a bar and a gym, and the terrace, display a beautiful blend of elegant marble and comforting wooden textures, adorned with textured paint. The ubiquitous fluidity of beige bleeds through curves in ceilings, walls, and nooks as a leitmotif that’s hard to miss. Additionally, fabrics in deep rust, green, and grey accentuate the interiors, “creating a rich tapestry of hues’’ as Palak calls it. Even the centre tables add to the interplay of textures via the use of wood, rough stone, glossy PU, and elegant brass. Furniture brands Bombay Design Lab, Escape, Loomcraft, Pinakin, and Hatsu carry the weight, and lighting labels Wicker Story, Olie Living, Shailesh Rajput, ALC, Hatsu, Length Breadth Height, Oorja, Sarita Handa, One o One Studios illuminate the space.
The master bedroom is almost elegiac. Palak says, “The varying tones of beige create a monochromatic haven, heightened by fluting and curves in the ceiling during the golden hour’’
The study overlooking the Mumbai skyline in the master bedroom.
The same fluidity is extended to the guest bedroom, with wooden textures in furniture and flooring.
Cheerful yellows lend a vivid contrast to a beige playroom, featuring a two-level playpen, a library, and a dedicated study space for children.
The attached bathroom is an artful canvas with a timeless herringbone pattern in white, grey, and yellow tiles.
The kids’ room is simply playful with understated tones of colours and materials. The blue-grey wardrobe with rattan embed and wooden pebble handles steals the spotlight.
The double-height terrace featuring soft Dholpur stone flooring and accents of brass in the bar area delivers a visceral harmony. Similarly, it’s experienced through the glass-cladded wooden staircase that connects different levels, establishing a visual continuum. This design choreography leads to the top-floor entrance, which underlines a striking fusion of fluted glass and a wooden sliding door. Throughout this home in Mumbai, an answer for each challenge and requirement is etched—in shapes, colours, sizes, textures, and functionality. The immense space reached its full utility with modern minimalism.
