This Ahmedabad bungalow is a great example of a minimal yet warm abode
Designed by Dhara Naik Pandya of DNP Design Studio, this minimal Ahmedabad home is highly functional and aesthetically pleasing
Ahmedabad 平房住宅-2
When Dhara Naik Pandya, founder of Ahmedabad-based interior design and architecture firm DNP Design Studio, wanted to renovate her two storied bungalow, she knew there was only one person who could do it justice to it — she, herself.
Dhara and her husband desired a modern and minimal home, which felt open and uncluttered. The 2,000-square-feet bungalow is for three generations—Dhara Naik Pandya and her husband, their two young daughters and Dhara’s father-in-law. The bungalow comprises three bedrooms and a study, besides living and dining areas, a kitchen, and a balcony. Each piece of furniture in the home has been customised with materials and finishes that create a harmonious look in each room. Pandya kept the furnishings and accessories minimal to make the space feel quiet and serene. Clean lines and a muted colour scheme define this home that’s tastefully elegant,
welcoming and practical
.

The living area houses custom made sofas from Pocho Living and a carpet from Rugberry.
The bungalow’s interiors are evocative of
Scandinavian design
. The home showcases a subdued colour palette, playing primarily with shades of grey. “We call our home the grey house because of its colour palette. My husband and I always wanted a very modern yet minimal home. We were very sure on using just three materials in the entire house—ash wood, concrete and metal. We didn’t want our house’s design aesthetic to be too loud in terms of colour and material palette. The only space I have used colour was in our daughters’ bedroom. They are very young and they wanted their room to be
colourful and fun
. Even in their bedroom, I did manage to use a shade of grey in combination with the vibrant pink,” mentions Dhara Naik Pandya, principal architect, DNP Design Studio.
Open and airy
This Ahmedabad bungalow’s living and dining area is a bright and airy space with thoughtfully curated furniture and decor pieces. The living room features contemporary grey and pink custom designed sofas, abstract artwork, and
unique decor pieces
. The textured wall with metal frames in the living area is the highlight of the space. It adds a rustic yet modern touch to the home. The living area opens into the dining area and kitchen, making it the perfect space for hosting. The dining area comprises a six-person, custom made dining table with a marble table top and a striking, modern chandelier. The dining area flows into a contemporary kitchen with sleek brown cabinets, a grey backsplash, black marble countertops, and state-of-the-art appliances. As the family loves to cook, the kitchen has ample storage.

The dining area features a modern chandelier from Shades of Light and a custom made dining table from Hanuzzi.
Industrial yet cosy
The bungalow’s bedrooms are simple yet elegant. The main bedroom is an inviting space, which showcases an industrial design aesthetic and a grey colour palette. A burnt brick wall, flanked by a wooden frame behind the headboard and textured grey walls, ties the space together. A work of contemporary art, a distinctive chair and a see-through wardrobe brings in a contemporary feel. While the bedroom has an industrial vibe, it is still cosy thanks to the plethora of soft furnishings.

Playful yet functional
The daughters’ bedroom is a fun yet practical space, which has its own character but still showcases the minimalist theme of the home. It houses two bunk beds connected with a staircase, which doubles up as a play area. This light-filled bedroom features a colourful animal-themed wallpaper, pink furnishings and vibrant bed-linen.

The daughters’ bathroom features a single tone terrazzo tile and fittings from Kohler India.
Moreover, the bungalow’s bathrooms were remodelled to make them bigger and to give them a similar colour palette and design aesthetic as the rest of the home.
Minimal and practical
Completing the tour of this
bungalow
is the study. The study features modern and minimal furnishings, harmonising with the rest of the house. It is a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing space, equipped with plenty of hidden storage. The study flows into a balcony, which offers unobstructed views of the picturesque, tree-filled neighbourhood.

“Always use your intuition while designing a space, never follow a trend that you are not so sure about. In the end, it’s all about loving what you have created. I do take in what’s going on in and around the design world and learn about new trends and materials, but I always choose wisely and mostly with my intuition,” concludes Dhara Naik Pandya.
