This Indian tech entrepreneur’s San Francisco house is layered with references to his homeland

Indian wedding ensembles are akin to works of art; they are shining manifestations of the country’s craft potential, unique enough to afford them an heirloom status. Tech entrepreneur Sujay Jaswa and his wife, Dr Eleni Jaswa, agree. Their handmade wedding attire—exquisite pieces by

—hangs in their newly redesigned home in San Francisco as art truly imbued with meaning. Designer Alexis Banks Humiston of ABH Interiors says, “We preserved these treasured garments as works of art by having them meticulously hand-sewn onto custom linen boards and framed in elegant white oak with non-reflective museum glass to protect their beauty and significance. Now displayed at the top and bottom of the staircase leading to the entertainment area, the pieces invite guests to admire their artistry while evoking cherished memories for the couple.”

The living room sets the tone for the rest of the home by artfully blurring the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors. Andersen sofas from Minotti lie alongside a set of original Art Deco chairs by Jindřich Halabala from 1st Dibs. A Stark area rug lines the floor.

A custom coffee table from Yield Designs ties the space together. On the lowermost shelf lies a rare Rembrandt; George Washington, Patriae Pater, made in 1827.

The dining area features a selection of Alfonso Marina Bahl II - Dining Chairs, upholstered in Kravet Fabric, and a Hellman-Chang dining table. A charming pendant light by Pinch Designs adds a sense of softness to the space.

A growing family with three young daughters meant that the Jaswa residence would have to be—at its very core—comfortable, liveable, and adaptable. The 9,500-square-foot San Franciscan home—a classic mid-century modern structure—reverberates with an Indian spirit. Yet, far from presenting as a kitschy Western reinterpretation of South Asian culture, it is refreshingly authentic.

Leading into the entertainment area, the Jaswa's wedding attire by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla—hangs as art truly imbued with meaning. A 20-foot custom banquette is finished in Perennials Fabric and made by Kroll Furniture.

Thoughtful interventions of Jaswa’s heritage culminate in the pièce de résistance—a dramatic 2,500-square-foot entertainment area that feels like a heady blend of a Mumbai speakeasy and a British members’ club. It features an extensive 20-foot banquette, wet bar, wine display, art display, silk-lined powder room, and media room. . Bone inlay cocktail tables dot the space, silk paisley fabrics are layered across seating areas, and a striking copper leaf is hand-applied onto the ceiling alcoves. “We added European design elements to reflect the clients’ love of travel,” says Humiston. “We also added a drum set and several pieces of art that reflect their love and practice of music.”

A custom walnut and brass coffee table by Artless Corporation is layered with Indian antiques from 1st Dibs; a Mughal motif serving tray, an Anglo Indian chessboard from the 1900s, and a tea and coffee service set from the 1800s.

The bathrooms, too, embody the ethos of indoor-outdoor living. A set of Liberty London robes hang in the master bathroom.

The entertainment area is decadent and bold, but beyond that, it is bursting with personality. A quick glance at the artwork displayed throughout—among them, a Chris Smith photograph:

—puts to rest any doubts on the subject. “Having collaborated with the Jaswas for several years, we’d already built a strong foundation of trust and understanding before creating the special entertainment area,” Humiston says. “Sujay, appreciative of the artistry, engaged in several decisions, but he ultimately granted us creative freedom. His main directive was simple yet powerful: ‘Make it epic.’”

The primary bedroom opens onto a lush expanse of green. A porch swing from One Kings Lane lies at the very centre, at the perfect spot to take in the view.

The outdoor spaces draw inspiration from the clients' beloved Napa retreats, seamlessly blending with the interiors to create a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor living, with landscape architecture by Ground Studio. Scattered throughout the outdoors are inviting features—a custom-made teak double California king daybed with a canopy, oversized sectionals perfect for lounging, cozy firepits, alfresco dining areas, and even an outdoor media room. A sparkling pool and soothing water features add to the sense of tranquillity. The seamless indoor-outdoor design is further reinforced by the conscious use of natural materials and expansive floor-to-ceiling glass walls that fully retract, blurring the lines between inside and out.

There’s a unique joy in designing for clients with whom a designer shares a deep resonance—one that shines through the interiors. For Humiston, the Jaswas embody just that. “This project will always hold special meaning, as it became a genuine reflection of who our clients are and what they cherish most,” she says. “With their deep connection to heritage, family, friends, nature, joy, and beauty, there was much to bring together—and the result is a thoughtful celebration of it all.”
