This Chandigarh villa is defined by its gentle curves and bold borders
Crafted by U and I Designs, this Chandigarh home is a combination of charming country chic with a laid back vibe of Danish hygge, blended with a modern European aesthetic that is at once both classical and minimal.

The home speaks in borders and curves. Various demarcated spaces are planned more with clever visual borders rather than an excess of walls. Hints of teak and veneer feature on the ceilings. With that, classic mouldings on the ceilings and walls with grooved details automatically act as graphical borders for the different spaces, and also bring artistic layers to the design story. A pattern of fluted walls along with grooves or concentric rings on ceilings and gently undulating pieces of furniture (like
tufted Chesterfield sofas or classical dining chairs) bring a hint of curves to the space.

The foyer opens into the formal living room, held together by a striking ‘layered’ ceiling with veneer enclosed by a moulded trim. The walls feature European trims and moulding with fluted tops. Plush beige Chesterfield sofas with brass buttons are custom-designed by U and I. A local wood coffee table, grey Rugberry carpet, a U and I bench and art from Best of Bharat complete the seating.
A lovely garden leads into the entry foyer of the villa spread over three levels, with three bedrooms, huge arch windows and three living spaces, which includes an eye-catching double height living area. This 5,000 square-foot villa with its classic
undertones, functional aesthetics, a quaint countryside charm and a relaxed Danish hygge vibe, was designed for a family of four by Aniketh Bafna, founder of U and I Designs, along with principal designer Sonal R. Mutha. It was built from the ground up, in a plush society in the quieter outskirts of Chandigarh, over a period of 18 months and completed only recently, in August 2022.

Monochrome patterned tiles and a sleek teak console by U and I Designs stands under a jute border mirror frame in the foyer.
The villa is home to Mrs. and Mr. Rajesh Sharma, and their son and his wife Mrs. and Mr. Abhinav Sharma, along with their pet golden retriever Zora, who has her own thoughtfully planned washing space in the utility room behind the
. Incidentally, the furnishings for the entire home were deliberately kept light to conceal all stray flecks of pet hair, as this home belongs to Zora as much as it does to the Sharmas.

The kitchen overlooks the informal family living room with an electric fireplace.
“Our design blueprint was reminiscent of modern European aesthetics and
hygge, which actually starts right from the grey outer façade accented with black cladding, which helps the rich teak door and window frames stand out even more,” explains Bafna, who, with Mutha, worked closely with the Sharmas’ trusted building contractor to design the details, elevation, material and look.

The open-plan dual-tone kitchen is located in the rear end of the home. A mix of pale powder blue is combined with the all-white cabinetry, backsplash and quartz countertop. A wooden breakfast counter with contrasting black chairs customized from Freedom Tree are balanced with delicate black borders on the glass shutter.
To further illustrate the visual bordering, take the main bedroom. It features a combination of a linear mould trimmed wall with an engineered wood flooring on one side and
floral wallpaper in nude with patterned floor tiles on the other side, again, smartly dividing two different spaces within one sinuous area.  The blue and white kitchen opens into the casual family room where the family can light a fire and toast to the crisp Chandigarh winter nights with their feet up. Tons of light pours in from the large French doors that lead into the backyard. A striking double height second family room, which is also the media room, is situated casually on the first floor staircase landing.

The second family room is coated in a pearlescent texture with sober wall trims and a circular abstract art and brass canvas. Two accent chairs in pop terracotta blush with simple grey sofas, a carpet from Rugberry and Minimal Indian’s cushions frame the space.

A dramatic blue bi-fold jaali door designed by U and I leads into the puja room. Locally sourced blue Moroccan tiles and a back-lit arch statuario panel highlights the fluted wall behind. Concentric concave ceiling circles house a stark pendant light.
A nearly nude and neutral palette, which
and brings in the element of country chic. There is a feeling within this home, that it is complete and content even with disparate elements—like a jaali patterned side chiffonier-cum-buffet table, and a set of azure blue metal doors to the puja room—that all come together quite effortlessly.

The large main bedroom is an amalgam of textures and patterns, meant to visually demarcate different zones. A linear trimmed wall frames the bed on an engineered wood floor. The two simple white nightstands and a headboard in a two-step contour with brass button highlights are by U and I Designs. Quaint brass wall lamps and bedding from Studio Covers complete the look.
