A new vision for the recycling of private historical heritage buildings in the city rethinks the use of these spaces with new programs and services open to the public for their enjoyment. The Falguera house is located on the “Paseo de la Presa” in Guanajuato. This promenade, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was formed by Porfirian-era infrastructures and mostly by old country manor houses in Art Nouveau and neoclassical styles that belonged to legendary mining entrepreneurs of the city.

With the La Bufa mountain range as a backdrop, one breathes nature, art, and health in the atmosphere of all its new services. The program to be developed consisted of the design and construction of two padel courts and a recreational bar area. The project represented a challenge due to the initiative of bringing this sport to the heart of the city and because of its location given the mountainous topographic conditions.

From this, the strategy focused on enhancing the connections between natural heritage and the club through specific interventions such as opening a large window in the boundary wall to expand views, transitioning spaces with stone stairs to bridge the level differences, adapting a space for services, and a roof that enabled the bar area.

For the project’s construction, an intense excavation process of rocky bedrock was carried out; its hardness allowed it to be left exposed, adding value and character to the player’s experience on the courts. In all other constructions, materials resulting from the excavation were reused, achieving simplicity and unity with the environment.

For the bar, a concrete counter was cast in situ using aggregates from the same excavated rock, and a new roof was designed using corrugated rebar filaments in an effort to generate economy, understanding their potential as elements with less steel area that, when joined and interwoven, could create an area similar to other more expensive profiles. This way, a very slender yet solid structural system was achieved. Only the roof was painted to blend with the existing vegetation, leaving the column legs uncovered so that time could leave its mark over the years.
