"We wanted to create a design with real character"says Shushana Kachatrian, interior & furniture designer, and founder of STUDIO SHOO
CONCEPT
Each ibis Styles hotel is designed to be truly unique — with its own distinctive theme, whether inspired by pop art, retro cars, nature, or cinéma.For the Tbilisi location, we chose stained-glass as our central theme. It reflects the city’s rich, multi-layered identity — a blend of Eastern and European influences. In traditional Tbilisi homes, stained-glass often features in wooden staircases and ornately carved balconies. It lends a lyrical depth to quotidian architecture rather than merely colour and light
IN PROGRESS
The hotel is located in a beautifully restored building in the heart of Old Tbilisi. This historic property is distinguished by its characterful architectural features — carved wooden balconies in a signature shade of turquoise, an original cast-iron spiral staircase, and traditional stained-glass windows that are emblematic of the city’s unique aesthetic
We made regular site visits throughout the construction process, selecting wall colours on site, testing signage options directly on the doors, and refining custom detailsBeing regularly on site allowed us to ensure that design decisions were implemented true to concept — from wall colours to room signage and custom elements
NOW
The hotel opened this spring and is already welcoming its first guests

The ground floor of the hotel features a welcoming lobby, a takeaway café offering freshly brewed coffee and sandwiches, fully equipped conference rooms, and guest elevators
Upon entering, guests are greeted by a striking bright yellow lounge seat, surrounded by plant-filled vases inspired by traditional Georgian design
Light-toned walls, flooring and ceilings serve as a subtle canvas, allowing the intricate, geometric shadows cast by the Georgian sun to take centre stage – adding a poetic dimension to the space
The architecturally sculpted reception area features a two-level desk, thoughtfully designed to be accessible for guests with disabilities

and waiting area
The waiting area outside the conference rooms includes a small kitchenette with a coffee machine and comfortable lounge chairs arranged by a large window overlooking the inner courtyard
The conference rooms follow the same design language as the rest of the hotel. Walls are painted in muted orange and paired with dusty green accents, while a geometric carpet pattern brings a sense of rhythm to the space
Playful touches such as statement light fixtures and elongated cabinet handles add character to the space

The breakfast self-service area features a similarly playful approach: white wall tiles are interspersed with colourful ones, and the vibrant cabinet doors are decorated with a subtle white dot pattern
The ground floor restroom is designed in a minimalist yet vibrant way, using a bold contrast of white and orange with black accents to create a clean, graphic look

The corridors leading to the rooms are lined with thick carpet for acoustic comfort and feature soft, ambient lighting. We aimed to make these spaces feel both vivid and welcoming, yet still intimate
The patterned carpet echoes the stained-glass motifs found in the rooms, while translucent coloured room numbers add a playful detail
