Hybrid Drawing, Hybrid Space: A 1:1 Installation Between Two Worlds
This installation bridges two seminal drawings—Street of Secret (2021) and Inclusive Landscape (2024)—by transforming their layered, speculative imagery into full-scale spatial experience. Instead of remaining as visual propositions, the drawings are dissected, their sequences extracted and reassembled into architectural fragments. The result invites visitors to move beyond observation into active participation, inhabiting the very spaces that once existed only on paper.

These “idea” drawings were created with a deliberate slant—about 70%—toward realisable architecture. But in this installation, that percentage increases, shifting into a more permanent, spatially engaging language. What emerges is a new hybrid—where drawn, image-loaded fragments form interiors and environments that straddle the line between imagination and built reality. In many ways, this is a personal and evolving form of Merzbau—a practice of architectural collage grounded in narrative and memory.

Taiwan as Influence and Mirror
Taiwan, with its twofold identity, plays a critical role in the conceptual genesis of the work. The bustling chain of western cities contrasts starkly with the enigmatic eastern mountains and near-forgotten coastlines. Between them lie lakes and the lingering tectonic memory of earthquakes—manifesting in cracks both literal and metaphorical. Over several visits to the island, its complex topography and fragmented architecture have subtly permeated the imagination, influencing recent drawings and providing a fertile ground for spatial conjecture.

The installation unfolds as a journey, with The Street of Secrets anchoring one end and The Inclusive Landscape the other. These poles represent not just geographical or thematic opposites, but a speculative continuum of urban and natural transformation. If cities are a manifestation of our desire to interact—and in today’s climate, to take risks—then the street is the most immediate medium of that expression. Yet it can also harbor ambiguity: crevices, deviations, and concealed narratives. The notion of an Urbanised Forest intensifies this mystification, where the pathway toward a “Palace of Hope” is lined with the unexpected.

From the opposite end, the landscape is no longer neutral. Seemingly natural terrains are punctuated by sudden insertions—outcrops, devices, or perhaps buildings in disguise. These interventions blur the boundaries between organic and artificial, prompting the question: could these two visions coalesce? Could one morph into the other?

Toward a Hybrid Architecture
Looking forward into a future Taiwan—and perhaps a future architecture—this installation serves as a set of metaphors: a hybrid spatial field formed by imaginative drawing, experimental construction, and reflective observation. It delves into both the literal and symbolic interior of the island, while also probing the expressive potential of fabrication and technological curiosity.

Ultimately, the work proposes that architecture need not choose between the conceptual and the real. Through the merging of drawn narrative and spatial presence, it suggests a new terrain: one where architecture is not just built, but drawn into being.

*Note: “Merzbau” refers to the seminal work of German artist Kurt Schwitters, who transformed his living space into a walk-in collage—a constantly evolving environment made of found materials, personal ephemera, and sculptural fragments.
