News Studios –
Set Design Development & Supervision
This project marked ASZ Studio’s first venture into broadcast set design — a unique opportunity to shape the visual identity of Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation (PBC)’s primary news studio in Ramallah.
Commissioned by Al-Assi Advertising and Contracting Company, our role involved design development, technical detailing, and supervision — transforming the 220 m² studio into a fully integrated, future-facing broadcast environment.
The Clear Ambition
While no formal design brief was provided, the goal was unspoken but evident: to overhaul the studio’s outdated, fragmented layout and align it with the aesthetics and technological standards of leading regional and international broadcasters. Broadcasting from Ramallah with audience around the globe, for the TV this was not just visual upgrades, but an enhancement of viewer trust, storytelling capacity, and production flexibility.
With that in mind, we focused on upgrading the studio’s spatial language through high-performance materials, dynamic and flexible lighting integration, and advanced screen technologies. For us, this mission was about creating a next generation of broadcast environment and define a new level of local capacity.
Design Vision & Process
The design introduced a unified master layout, connecting four distinct sets into one spatial ecosystem. Each corner was crafted to maintain its unique identity while remaining visually and functionally integrated with the others — a key requirement for live broadcasting flexibility. Moveable screens, hidden entrances and hidden storage spaces, and concealed equipment access points are woven seamlessly into the sets. Even oversized furniture elements were designed to be mobile, with hidden cable management and underfloor lighting adding both clarity and drama.
At the center of the studio lies a dramatic curved LED wall and a continuous raised news bar, creating a curvilinear anchor element. This expressive form serves not only as a visual icon, but as a stage for multiple storytelling formats — from headline updates to deep-dive analysis. This design approach gave the whole news studio a unique image reflecting centralization and inclusivity, through being wide and open, with the image flowing in and beyond camera frame.
Early design brainstorming — involving key figures such as the late director Firas Abdel Rahman — clarified a major insight: news content needed to evolve beyond traditional static delivery toward a more immersive, narrative-driven approach. This thinking became the conceptual backbone of our design. Such approach, intersects with viewers carving more depth in information, analysis and explanation in news, rather than headlines and breaking news.
With such concept in mind, the design development took workshop style process to revitalize the studio, collecting, analyzing and trying different approaches to re-draw the initial ideas and design layouts, prepared earlier to our work.
From Sketches to Fabrication — All in Palestine
The last design development phase lasted around four months and included on-site surveying, layout development, infrastructure detailing, and extensive collaboration with PBC’s interior and lighting teams.
Every set element — from CNC-milled components to acrylic forms, metal structures, carpentry works, custom furniture, and hidden cable pathways — was fabricated in Palestine by Al-Assi’s multidisciplinary team. A top of all challenges was the ongoing war on Gaza. The project saw reactivation in late 2024 and continues to evolve. Other challenges included material shortages, coordination among multiple teams, logistical delays, and the availability of high-quality materials that met the acoustic and visual standards of a live studio, with on-site tests and each and every element and formation. We tackled such challenges by carefully balancing aesthetic goals with production and site limitations.
Key technical features include
> Fully integrated RGBW LED lighting tied to control mixers.
> Mobile, reconfigurable furniture.
> Acoustic paneling and epoxy matte flooring for light control.
> Concealed access points for AV, storage, and broadcast infrastructure.
This is a first-of-its-kind studio in Palestine — one that brought together local expertise and a global visual language. While Palestinian cultural heritage as a visual expression was not a direct reference, the ability to evolve, to develop, to thrive and produce a state-of-the-art studio in-country (an occupied and under attack country), is a powerful expression of local capacity and potential.
For us at ASZ Studio, this was a chance to bridge design with production realities — to translate sketches and simulations into tangible, high-performance studio environments. We’re proud to have played a role in shaping this new visual and spatial identity for the national broadcaster.
Set 1: The Main News Studio
Located at the heart of the layout, sets roughly in center of studio and adjacent to the main entrance. This is the 24-hour broadcast zone, framed by a sweeping LED wall and anchored by two interchangeable tables:
> A modular round table, formed by a central circle and four quarter-ring segments — easily adapted for different formats.
> A 6-meter L-shaped table, allowing for wide-angle seating of up to 4 guests or presenters.
Both tables are mobile, wired, and built with flexibility and efficiency in mind.
Set 2: The Dialogue Set
Designed for one-on-one or small group discussions, this corner set features a seating arrangement positioned at a 90-degree angle, with slightly elevated seats and desks for a more dynamic exchange. The platform is finished with laminated hardwood flooring. Behind the speakers, three vertical sliding screens provide flexibility, allowing multiple background layouts to suit the discussion’s tone or topic.
Set 3: The Experts Analysis Set
This set is anchored by a vertically curved video wall, creating an immersive backdrop. A standing presenter addresses the audience from a sleek, lightweight podium, making it ideal for in-depth analysis, special investigations, or expert commentary. The space is designed to focus attention on the speaker and their insights.
Set 4: The Guests Studio
A spacious, relaxed corner set, accommodating up to two presenters and two guests in a comfortable, conversational layout. The backdrop combines an array of integrated screens with vertical backlit strips, while the entire set rests on a raised platform of triple-layered black glass, creating a visually engaging setting for interviews and guest segments.
This studio is more than a broadcasting space. It’s a statement about what local design teams in Palestine can accomplish when given the opportunity. At ASZ Studio, we’re proud to contribute to a project that redefines visual storytelling in the region — one that was imagined, designed, and built entirely on home soil.
