“To do what one likes, at the time one prefers, in one’s own way—that is my definition of a free individual.”▼

This 5.5-meter-tall residential renovation project spans a floor area of 70 square meters. Benefiting from exceptional natural light permeability, the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows were originally split vertically by the structure into upper and lower sections. Our redesign reconfigures the spatial layout: the ground floor primarily accommodates the living/dining area and workspace, while the upper level focuses on private living spaces. Through the incorporation of a double-height living area, we enhance natural light penetration into the bedrooms while enabling visual connections between both levels.

Our core concept is to open up the entire space, minimizing any sense of enclosure, and allowing sightlines and natural light to travel seamlessly throughout every area.
Through differentiated design, we minimized the visual weight of the flanking structural columns while achieving visual balance: one column was transformed into an arcing surface that extends to the ceiling, enveloping the pillar, ventilation duct, and vertical piping. The opposing column was integrated within a composition of metallic paneling and wooden volumes. This approach creates a distinct visual dialogue between the two structural elements.
Staircase
The floating wooden staircase features a minimalist tiered design that serves as the visual anchor of the double-height space. Its treads invite casual seating, fostering interaction between levels. Beneath the structure lies a multifunctional zone for storage or display—where a frequently revisited book, an unglazed ceramic vase, or a table lamp resides. These curated objects quietly narrate the daily rhythms of this home.
The staircase directs the gaze toward the far wall, amplifying the sense of spaciousness. Recessed detailing on the wall breaks the visual monotony, framing an ultrathin television that appears to float like an art piece. Sinking into the sofa during a film screening, one basks in dappled sunset glow filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows—where tranquil ambiance unfurls, effortlessly.
Dining Room
The open kitchen establishes a seamless connection with the living area. Its integrated breakfast bar/counter island structure streamlines movement while creating a multifunctional hub for social dining.
书房
Study
Considering the owner’s work-from-home needs, a desk area has been seamlessly embedded alongside the living room, preserving spatial openness while adding practical functionality. The floor-to-ceiling storage system stretching from the entryway to the living room provides substantial storage support for the ground floor.
The primary limitation of the ground-floor bathroom was its lack of natural lighting. This was resolved by implementing a "borrowed light" strategy, successfully channeling valuable natural light into the previously windowless space.
卧室
Bedroom
The second floor, designed as a private bedroom sanctuary, extends beyond functional fulfillment to cultivate an atmosphere of profound relaxation. A thoughtfully planned circular circulation seamlessly connects the sleeping area, walk-in closet, and bathroom, enhancing both convenience and spatial fluidity. The full-height window directly framing the bedside essentially realizes the notion that "it’s not the jarring alarm clocks, but the first rays of dawn light that awaken you."
Walk-in Closet
The tri-section master bathroom layout maximizes efficiency. Natural light from the bedroom streams in through floor-to-ceiling glass partitions, complemented by daylight-mimicking fixtures, transforming the once-dim space into an unexpectedly bright sanctuary.
