As of late, ISSEY MIYAKE has significantly raised its profile in Fukuoka. Following a standalone boutique and shop-in-shops in this thriving coastal city, the Japanese fashion brand has inaugurated its biggest boutique nationwide at Fukuoka Airport. Situated airside, in the international terminal, the ISSEY MIYAKE store occupies a lofty unit on the third floor, and features an interior design by Tokyo-based architecture and design practice MOMENT. Clean and understated, the retail space is dominated by an expansive ceiling light which spans almost the entire length of the store, and which references designer Issey Miyake‘s visionary APOC, or in full, A Piece of Cloth, a concept apparel line which was first introduced in 1997.

The light fixture is bent diagonally, giving it an optical twist, from plain and flat, to three-dimensional, and as such giving shoppers a spatial experience that changes when navigating the store. Given the location of a busy international airport terminal, traditional a distinctly Japanese element was added—flooring comprised of traditionally crafted, smoked roofing tiles. Furnishings are matching, comprising a configuration of fixed sleek clothing racks, paired with matching display tables, glass-top display tables, in addition to backlit, tiered shelving. The new ISSEY MIYAKE store carries a number of lines, including ISSEY MIYAKE, IM Men, Pleats Please, Homme Plissé, BAO BAO, me ISSEY MIYAKE, Good Goods, ISSEY MIYAKE watch, and ISSEY MIYAKE eyes. © superfuture
