Introduction
On the ground floor of an old residential community at the foot of Beijing’s Western Hills, a 95㎡ two-bedroom apartment quietly awaited renewal. The homeowners, expecting a new child, needed to create a warm home for their parents and their baby. However, this north-south oriented layout had inherent flaws: its ground-floor location, narrow face width, and an ultra-long depth of 13.5 meters made this “One-Line Sky” two-bedroom feel dark, narrow, and elongated. The challenge was to create three bedrooms while working within the constraints of pervasive load-bearing walls, all while ensuring good natural light, a sense of openness, and independent spaces for three generations.

The designers inserted a box-like structure for the children’s room into the living room. To minimize its encroachment on the public area, the box was rotated to a 45-degree angle. This creative placement formed dual flared openings, achieving a remarkable visual expansion effect in this narrow layout and providing a surprising solution.

Design Analysis Section
In Beijing, many old residential communities feature typical “narrow strip” layouts to improve indoor thermal efficiency, and this apartment is one of them. The south-facing kitchen/dining area has a face width of only 2.4 meters, while the north-facing living room is 3.6 meters wide, with a depth stretching 13.5 meters. Compounded by its ground-floor position—where natural light is limited—the space felt dark and confined. The clients, a multi-generational family, had very clear requirements: they wanted to add a children’s bedroom and a walk-in closet, but insisted on maintaining a sense of openness and airflow throughout the entire apartment. Conventional solutions would involve rigidly partitioning a room out of the living room, inevitably making it darker and more cramped—the more you partition, the darker and more obstructed it becomes. The fate of the entire space changed when the lead designer rotated the small square representing the children’s room by 45 degrees on the blueprint.

This seemingly simple adjustment was actually a decision based on precise spatial calculations. The widest point inside the room is 2.46 meters, sufficient for a children’s treehouse bunk and a reading nook, with internal aisles over 90 centimeters wide.

Living Room: The Angled Children’s Room, A Spatial Illusion
The children’s room, inserted diagonally into the living room, acts to refract southern sunlight deeper into the living space. The exterior wall of the box is constructed with two materials. The upper part, built with glass bricks, allows light to continue its journey. The lower part uses small blue bricks on the south-facing, light-receiving surface, resembling clear water that scatters light, enhancing the brightness and creating a shimmering effect on the entire wall.

The edges of the sliding door and the angled corners are curved to avoid sharp angles and potential bumps.Inside the children’s room, besides accommodating a bed, a reserved triangular built-in seat in the corner creates a cozy nook for bedtime stories. The treehouse bunk allows for play, accommodates future adult companionship for sleep, and provides for potential needs like a second child.

The two entrances make the children’s room fluid, allowing for play like hide-and-seek and facilitating internal ventilation. The rotated wall naturally creates a flared opening visual effect, suddenly giving the originally cramped living room a sense of depth.

To avoid crowding the walkway and space, the opposite wall features an ultra-thin floating bookshelf paired with a movable TV. The wall has pre-embedded reinforced steel plates, providing strong load-bearing capacity for storage while maintaining visual lightness; even at 3.4 meters long, it doesn’t feel oppressive. The flooring throughout the space is light-colored limestone, adding a natural feel, and the small-format tiling enhances the sense of spatial extension.

Opposite the bookshelf, a custom-built banquette sofa further reinforces this sense of openness, ensuring every inch of space is fully utilized.

To provide more seating, the sofa frame and the balcony platform were custom-built as one unit, fashioned into an L-shaped seating surface fitted precisely to the balcony opening, saving 20% more space than a conventional sofa. The space underneath is left open for storage baskets, allowing for easy toy access and tidy-up. The raised balcony platform serves as a triple-purpose area for yoga, reading, and play.

The size of the sofa does not impede the opening and closing of the children’s room archway, allowing even adults to pass through comfortably.

Kitchen/Dining: A Delicious Space in a “Narrow Alley”
The north-facing kitchen/dining area presented greater challenges. A face width of merely 2.45 meters rendered traditional layout methods completely ineffective. The designers’ solution was a custom 2-meter-long, 65-centimeter-wide narrow island. It integrates a dining table, preparation counter, and storage cabinet, making it highly functional and convenient. The remaining aisle width is still sufficient for passage even when someone is seated.

The kitchen has an efficient U-shaped layout. Appliances are concentrated on the left, the sink area is in the middle, and the cooking zone is on the right. The laundry area was relocated to the living room where water supply and drainage were convenient, consequently freeing up space in the bathroom.

The bathroom was divided into internal and external zones, reorganized into an efficient four-corner circulation path. The external zone features a floating vanity on the left to avoid hard-to-clean corners; local red accents brighten the blue color scheme. On the right is a partition cabinet, shaped like a screen, which opens towards the shower room for convenient storage of towels, toiletries, and supplies. The internal area is split into two zones: a toilet room on the left and a shower room on the right, both maintaining the fresh blue color scheme.

Elderly’s Room: Age-Friendly and Serene
The north-facing bedroom is for the elderly. The area by the window was thickened to create a half-wall headboard, serving as support for getting up at night. A red metal bracket was added on top, doubling as a bedside shelf. A full-wall wardrobe provides ample storage. The layout is simple and quiet.

Afterword
This transformation of a 95㎡ two-bedroom into a three-bedroom home did not involve knocking down walls to expand the footprint, nor did it sacrifice lighting or become crowded and oppressive. Instead, it features the dynamic perspectives brought by the angled children’s room, the gentle light introduced through glass brick walls, the utmost respect for dimensions through custom furniture, and the cleverness of truly “using” every inch of space. In this home, every member can find their own corner while still being able to gather in the bright common areas. Multi-generational living isn’t about compromise; it’s about using design to allow every generation to live together comfortably.
