A Modular Landscape Garden
Wu Yi Jian is composed of the “Wu Space,” the “Yi Space,” and the connecting “Jian.” The Wu Space is relatively private, while the Yi Space is open and transparent. The garden-like Jian fluidly links the two, allowing each to express its own character. Within the interior, modular partitions of varying heights and sizes create a layered composition reminiscent of a traditional Chinese garden—where the interplay of solid and void brings out infinite interest within a finite space.

WU · The Meaning in the Unintended

The Wu Space functions primarily as an exhibition area, featuring display stands and walls. One side is enclosed to create an immersive exhibition atmosphere, while the other gradually opens toward the surrounding mountains and trees—sometimes fully, sometimes partially, sometimes high, sometimes low—becoming a dialogue between interior and exterior, between humanity and nature. A pool of water reflects the breathtaking scenery of Sanbaopeng outside the window, weaving a narrative of reality and illusion with the falling autumn leaves.

The secluded tearoom is, in the mind, an “elsewhere”—a distant, imagined land beyond the main space. It is a place where, in just a few steps, one can escape worldly concerns; a retreat at home.

YI · Transparency and Fluidity
The Yi Space integrates exhibition and display functions with a bar serving drinks and light snacks, as well as spaces for workshops and events. Designed to be more open and transparent, it is a flowing space for both dwelling and wandering—appearing fully visible at first glance, yet layered with richness and vitality.

JIAN · A Courtyard Between
Masayuki Kurokawa wrote in The Eight Aesthetic Senses of Japan: “Jian is a space created by ‘qi,’ filled with abundant energy.” The courtyard positioned between the two spaces seems to create its own flow of spirit and atmosphere.

Art and Life Measured by the Body
A garden is a retreat for both movement and stillness. As stated in The Craft of Gardens, “Curves have measure; movement and stillness are at ease.” Beyond meeting functional needs, Wu Yi Jian is crafted as a space that holds and shelters according to the scale of the human body. Here, the first sensations are relaxation and ease: when clients visit, discussions can unfold in the tearoom; when friends arrive, tea, coffee, or wine can be enjoyed by the valley stream; when travelers come, they can walk, recline, or sit at leisure amid birdsong and insect hum. Measuring space by the body means letting it serve people—following the body’s inclinations to naturally find where it wants to be.

All furnishings here are not only works in the natural style of Wu Yi Jian, but also objects to be experienced, touched, and felt. Art is not meant to be aloof or sealed away in glass cases; only when it is woven into daily life can it convey genuine care and warmth.

The Natural Growth of Space
“All great art never exists solely for itself. It exists for those who behold it.” What Wu Yi Jian carries is content that flows like water, and its participants include not only us and its visitors, but also the nearby trees, distant mountains, the rising and setting of the sun, the cycle of seasons, and even the smallest objects and plants. Completion is only the first step; what follows is the slow, natural growth that unfolds in its own time.
