Extending time among Yandang to foster a deeper more layered natural experience
Yandang Mountain, Bearing a Millennium of Cultural Heritage
Mount Yandang, a national 5A scenic spot and a UNESCO Global Geopark, is renowned for its extraordinary peaks and rocks, sheer cliffs and seas of clouds, as well as its profound cultural heritage. The trail from Fangdong to Lingyan winds through the mountains, accompanied by murmuring streams, with every scene resembling a living landscape painting. However, visitors usually spend less than two hours here. The traditional sightseeing model can no longer satisfy contemporary desires for in-depth experiences, nor can it fully convey the richness of Yandang’s natural and cultural resources.

Following the Cliff Series at Mount Yandang, our design thinking also extends to the operational dimension: how to transform a two-hour sightseeing visit into a 24-hour immersive journey. Along the route, neglected and nearly abandoned sites are reimagined as a series of continuous experiential nodes. Among them, the Pingxiaxuan Teahouse and the Lingfeng Cultural & Creative Store serve as two key anchors on this extended line of experience.

Preserving to the Greatest Extent, Intervening with Subtlety
Following the principle of “weak design,” the building’s original structure and façade are preserved as much as possible, and the gently ascending terrace at the entrance is not newly constructed but rather a continuation of the existing site. Moss spreads across its surface, while the weathered stone slabs quietly narrate the building’s history. Extending from the terrace to the roof, oil-paper umbrellas create a rhythmic order that echoes the distant peaks, forming a unique and subtle harmony.

Daily Spaces Immersed in Nature
The first floor of the teahouse is primarily dedicated to tea and light dining experiences, complemented by a comfortable viewing area. The spatial layout follows the original foundation, while the outdoor space allows for flexible arrangements of tables and chairs to accommodate both large tour groups and smaller gatherings of two or three. Guided by operational considerations, the design transforms this place into a multifunctional immersive venue for both leisure and performance.

With time-worn timber as its bones, the gentle grain of the wood carries the warmth of years, engaging in a dialogue across time with the ancient temples nestled in the mountains and forests. Unlike the formality of traditional tea seating, we chose linen-upholstered sofas that embrace the space, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the fragrance of tea in the most relaxed posture.

Large openings not only draw nature inside but also frame the surrounding mountain landscape as part of the space itself. This is more than a place for tea; it is a sensory ritual infused with the aesthetics of nature—when the mountain breeze drifts through the windows, candlelight flickers, and tea steam rises, the entire space becomes a Zen vessel that connects heaven and earth while settling the soul.

Paper lanterns cast a moonlike glow, tracing dappled shadows of trees across a space defined by intentional simplicity. Carefully chosen indoor greenery overlaps with the ancient trees outside the windows, while light and shadow flow and dance across the wooden textures and plain white walls.

Bridge Between History and Time
The staircase linking the first and second floors preserves the original stone slabs, while the moss on the stone walls, echoing the surrounding mountains and forests, turns each ascent and descent into a delicate sensory journey. A veranda gently encircles the teahouse, forming a semi-open space that offers multiple possibilities for interaction with nature.

Starting from the ground level, the space gradually rises, passing through the transitional terrace at the second-floor entrance and extending all the way to the rooftop viewing deck. The circulation feels gently lifted by the mountain’s contours, creating a layered and progressive journey. As visitors move and pause along the way, the atmosphere gradually unfolds, offering a relaxed and unhurried rhythm.

The viewing terrace at the second-floor entrance is built along the natural slope, perfectly nestled between the mountain and the building. Bamboo groves surround and weave through the terrace, with shoots naturally emerging through its openings, creating a sense of coexistence between the space and the forest. This area serves both as a transitional zone from the interior to the natural surroundings and as an ideal spot for visitors to pause and savor the mountain atmosphere.

The design preserves the building’s original roof, allowing moss to take center stage and enabling the structure to truly “grow” within its environment. The layered blue tiles become more than mere shelter—they transform into a vibrant three-dimensional canvas, where moss of varying shades spreads freely, like brushstrokes of time painting subtle ink tones, intertwining light and dark, soft and lush like a plush carpet. The staircase winds along the walls and eaves in a gentle spiral, inviting a slow and unhurried pace. Upon reaching the rooftop, the view opens expansively, with layers of distant mountains unfolding before the eyes. The airy canopy of umbrellas resonates with the daylight, adding a distinct touch of poetry to the vast mountain landscape.

The second floor features private rooms, offering an alternative setting for the tea experience. Lazy, comfortable linen sofas and elegant traditional tea tables cater to modern desires for comfort while preserving the ritualistic essence of Eastern tea culture. Carefully selected miniature bonsai engage in a subtle dialogue with the grand natural scenery visible through the windows.

The greatest gift of the private room is the dynamic natural scene framed by the window: opening it reveals the rustic eaves of Lingyan Temple peeking through the verdant canopy, with the chanting and mountain breeze seeming almost within reach. The distant cliffs unfold fully before the eye, as a gentle wind stirs sheer curtains, blending the aroma of tea with the sound of the breeze to create a tranquil and lingering viewing experience.

From here, Tianzhu Peak and Zhanqi Peak unfold fully before the eye, offering a panoramic view of the Lingyan cliff performance and allowing visitors to immerse themselves in both the spectacle and the surrounding natural scenery.

Pingxiaxuan, growing organically within nature and time, takes the form of a terraced viewing platform that steps gracefully along the mountain slopes, unfolding layer by layer like an artwork sculpted by the earth itself.

It unfolds freely while maintaining a sense of rhythm within its order. As the seasons change, vegetation gradually climbs, envelops, and weaves through the structure, ultimately merging the building with the surrounding forest, presenting a serenity and composure shaped by the passage of time.

Lingfeng Cultural & Creative Store: From Forgotten Pavilions to Public Waystations, New Gathering Spaces in the Mountains and Wilderness
Lingfeng, the eastern gateway of Mount Yandang, is renowned for its stacked cliffs, peculiar peaks and rocks, strange stone chambers, and clear emerald pools. Together with Lingyan and Dalongqiu, it is celebrated as one of the “Three Wonders of Yandang.” Two major caves—Guanyin Cave and Beidou Cave—are must-visit attractions, while Zhangshou Peak stands out as one of the representative landscapes of Mount Yandang.

The Lingfeng Cultural & Creative Store is located at a key node within the Lingfeng Scenic Area, offering distant views of Guanyin Cave and Zhangshou Peak. Originally functioning only as a small convenience shop, visitors would mostly make brief stops to purchase drinks, leaving the space lacking vitality and offering very limited interaction with the surrounding scenery.

The design is guided by an upgrade concept that focuses on embedding cultural and creative activities while improving basic amenities. By extending the existing site, the aim is to let natural elements permeate the space, encourage interaction between visitors and the landscape, prolong their stay, and enhance the overall experiential value of the site.

By embedding a glass box into the original building, the spatial visual field extends outward, completely opening up the previously enclosed corner and gradually blurring the boundary between inside and outside. This space is no longer a simple interior, but a more open point of convergence.

Nearly all visitors arriving at Lingfeng pause here to meet and interact, transforming the space from a mere support facility into a new destination. It not only provides a refined spot for rest and photo opportunities but also showcases the profound cultural heritage of Mount Yandang through cultural and creative products. The previously empty area beneath the trees has been transformed into a circular mini-theater, and as boundaries open up, the spatial scenarios grow organically. Centered around the cultural and creative store, visitors’ activities scatter beneath the large trees, along the streams, at the corners by the arched bridges, and even between lawns and stone paths, spontaneously forming natural clusters throughout the site.

Pingxiaxuan Teahouse and the Lingfeng Cultural & Creative Store, as key nodes along the Mount Yandang route, follow the principles of “weak design” and “micro-renewal,” transforming what was once a brief sightseeing visit into a more nuanced and lasting experience. Rather than intervening on a large scale to alter the landscape, the design responds to the site’s characteristics, weaving together architecture, landscape, and visitor activity so that during their stay, visitors form deeper connections with both nature and culture.
