1.缘起
Origin
In the winter of 2023, we were commissioned to design a public amenities building within a planned guesthouse complex. The structure was to serve multiple functions, including light dining, a kitchen, a café, and spaces for meetings and gatherings. The site is located in Longwanggou Village, Shiyan City, Hubei Province, nestled in a small valley near the Danjiangkou Reservoir—about an hour’s drive from the Danjiangkou Dam. The surrounding landscape is defined by gentle hills and a network of interlacing stream valleys that fringe the reservoir’s edge.

Before we arrived, the construction team had already completed roadworks and site grading. On our first visit, the scene came as something of a surprise: the terrain, which once flowed naturally into the valley and rice paddies, had been carved into a series of artificial terraces and parking lots—deviating significantly from the original vision shaped by the site’s hilly topography and hydrological system. In many rural revitalization projects, municipal infrastructure is often implemented ahead of architectural planning, with architects brought in only at a later stage. As a result, when roads and landforms are already in place, architectural design becomes a passive process of adaptation. This unavoidably limits both the spatial quality of the built environment and the continuity of the natural landscape.

A Horizon Reshaped in Concrete
Unexpectedly, it was the temporary construction barricade that sparked our inspiration—calling to mind the monumental yet ephemeral land art installations of Christo and Jeanne-Claude. From a distance, the blue barrier sliced across the valley as a flat band of pure color, like a brushstroke in a digital rendering. Up close, the corrugated metal panels, exposed screws, and traces of manual labor pulled this abstraction back into the tangible reality of the landscape. Unlike the artists’ works, which used lightweight fabric to engage fluidly with the contours of the land, this metal line defied the terrain—asserting itself with a rigid, industrial clarity. Cut into the slope to form terraces, the blue construction line instead accentuated the artificial incision, juxtaposing the two flanking hills and creating an “artificial valley” imbued with a sense of absurdist humor.

This precise horizontal line—demarcated by the blue metal fence—happened to align perfectly with the edge of the terrace. As it extended laterally across the site, it visually stitched together the hills on either side, unintentionally establishing a landscape threshold that separated upper and lower grounds. Building upon this gesture, we introduced a similarly assertive intervention: a linear architectural insertion into the landform, preserving the distant abstraction while transforming it into a functional landscape corridor.

Constrained by a limited construction budget, we substituted traditional small timber formwork with standard 150mm-wide finished wood decking. The resulting concrete surface exhibits a stronger texture and directional rhythm. The wood grain, embedded into the geometric composition, softens the abstraction of the concrete and anchors it in material tactility.

The Void Between Volumes

The architecture establishes a secondary plane and boundary dedicated to programmatic activities, composed through a dialogue of horizontal and vertical forms. Within the concrete volumes, three light courts are inserted—each connected to the circulation paths. A series of carefully placed openings bring in and frame natural elements such as sunlight, the earth, tree shadows, and the sky, resetting the user’s gaze and bodily experience while establishing a new orientation for the human presence within nature.

The vertical light court is a double-height, semi-open cubic void measuring 7.5m × 7.5m × 7.5m. It connects the dining area, open kitchen, and meeting room laterally, while vertically linking people to the sky and the ground through shifting light. What was once an inward-facing interior space is now animated with a rhythm of solidity and void, progression and retreat. The three functional rooms are interrelated yet individually expressive. The light court registers the passage of time through the movement of light while also guiding the user’s line of sight. Architectural fragments are perceived sequentially, creating a layered spatial experience. The interior flooring is finished with an epoxy resin in a tone and texture close to concrete, reinforcing the continuity between interior and exterior space.

Floating Within the Landscape
To give the architecture a sense of levitation and achieve a large column-free span, both the roof and the floor are constructed with ribbed concrete slabs, forming a three-dimensional structural shell. Vertical loads are transferred through the stair cores at both ends, their adjoining shear walls, and a series of staggered longitudinal wall planes, all bearing down onto a monolithic raft foundation. In non-load-bearing areas, full-height longitudinal windows are introduced wherever possible, and operable windows at both ends enable cross-ventilation. These strategies collectively reduce the visual and physical mass of the structure, enhancing spatial transparency. The inverted beams in the roof slab also serve to integrate MEP systems, while the ceiling surface retains the raw texture of fair-faced concrete.
The roof is topped with an ultra-thin reflecting pool, softening the visual weight of the inverted beams and lending the volume a lighter, more abstract presence. Its horizontal mirror contrasts with the rugged textures of the surrounding mountains, while also echoing the distant surface of the reservoir. The concrete shell was cast in a single pour. To balance the mid-span bending moments of the main beams, both the roof and floor slabs were designed with a slight upward camber. This subtle adjustment minimizes early-stage stress and deformation, preventing cracking during the curing process. Amid the natural world’s irregularity, the building stands like a bridge—a precise geometric territory carved out of chaos.

Horizontally oriented timber grain extends across the terraces, while cantilevers and voids function like a miniature abstraction of the topography: lighter above, more open in section. In contrast to the rough, accidental presence of the blue construction fence, the building transforms human traces into a precise, restrained minimalist sculpture. On the same site, roughness and refinement, the incidental and the intentional, the temporary and the permanent coexist in quiet dialogue.
